Lady friend of mine has been looking at an '08 plate one, and has asked me whether they are reliable or not. Now Honest John doesn't seem to have a good word to say about earlier models, so just wondered if anybody on here has any first hand experience of them.
TIA

Err, had one as a hire car for a few days - it was adequate but dull in every possible way. The 1.4 petrol was gutless and thirsty.

She's middle aged and a little portly, so not sure she'd fit in an MX5 hehe

It is as good as a Fiesta in terms of reliability, but the Fiesta is better and will be worth more when she tries to sell it.

The Ford Fusion was designed around the needs of people with limited mobility, arthiritis and poor eyesight.

Seriously - it first featured on the 'old' Top Gear as a concept - they'd designed a special suit that allowed their younger designers to experience what it was like trying to drive when old and decrepit, and basically modified a Fiesta to suit.

Andy Wilman tried it out and basically said 'if you feel you need a car like this, you shouldn't be driving.'

The whole jacked-up tall-hatch crossover thing that ensued just serves as a permanent visual reminder of all the drivers on the road who need giving a wide berth.

And the Ford Fusion isn't? I can't think of a car more obviously aimed at pensioners with dodgy hips than the Fusion. It's one of the least stylish cars ever made.

Compared with the Fusion yikes. Not I know anything bad about the Fusion, the top spec. ones are quite comfortable.

A neigbour has one, I think walking would be much better.

Much better and engaging out there than a Ford box.

Someone i know has one purely because the low loading lip at the back means you can get a wheelchair in it easily. It has been very reliable but is actually a Mazda 2 and not a Fusion. The previous version of the Mazda 2 was the same car as the Ford Fusion but cheaper

I suppose the low lip is a very good point compared to a lot of the superminis.

What I'm up against is that she currently runs a Ka and has never, in 6 years of ownership, had a problem with it, so assumes that all Fords are wonderful! That's females for you confused

My Mrs had one and if you focus on what you want to buy it for then its maybe not as bad as many would have you believe. As said, its basically a fiesta, so not actually a terrible drive, easy to get parts for, very reliable (ours was) and the most important part for us - absolutely tremendously practical for a car of that size. The load space was very well designed and was just cavernous compared to anything else in its class (when first released). We bought it when the dealers were selling them at almost invoice price, and sold it two years later for less depreciation than I could have imagined.

Not all cars have to be sexy and great performing....this was a middle of the road car which was good at what it was designed for....you just need to make sure your requirements match its specific assets....if they don't then it was a poor fiesta.
