my series 1 mx5 needs a new battery

are there any other alternatives to the westco battery?

if so, how difficult is it to replace the battery tray to accept an alternative battery

mx5 parts are charging about £100 for a westco-----are you aware of any cheaper sources for a westco?

I have just bought one from here:
http://www.tayna.co.uk/31M-Westco-MX-5-MX5-Car-Bat...
Cheaper than mx5parts, only trouble is that they are out of stock until 19th dec.

I threw a standard Halfords battery in mine 4 years ago (replacing another standard lead acid battery a previous owner had fitted). No corrosion so far... I could just be lucky though.

rob and munter , thank-you for taking the trouble to reply

rob---did the tanya-westco battery fit the original battery tray , and , did the metal bracket that holds the battery in place fit without modification?
i ask this, because the dimensions of this battery appear to be slightly different to the original panasonic battery

munter---have you used a battery tray at all with the halfords battery?
halfords still do a replacement, but the dimensions are again different.
is a battery tray really necessary with a sealed maintainance -free battery?
i take it that there is no problem with the battery slip-sliding around, and that the only function of the tray is to prevent corrosion in the event of spillage

thank-you

I think the only important thing is to make sure the battery is vented. Should have a nozzle or two which hooks up to a couple of rubber pipes and down through the boot floor. I just went for the westco from MX5parts.

The westco from tayna is listed for a mk1, so i am assuming that it will fit without modification. We will see when it arrives.

i have had a very prompt and helpful response from tayna batteries

the westco battery should be a direct replacement for the original panasonic battery

tayna will also give you a 5% discount if you have a facebook page (which i dont unfortunately !!) and write in to recommend tayna
