No MBE connection to laptop!
Discussion
1. Connect everything up
2. Start up the Diags
3. Ignore the error message that the ECU is not connected,
2. Right Click My Computer > Manage
3. Go to Device Manager
4. In the RH Pane go to Ports (com1 LPT), and expand it
5. Right Click on Com1, and select Uninstall - ignore the warnings
6. Right click on Ports and select 'Scan for Hardware Changes'
Now go back to the Diags and select the Reconnect to ECU.
I wonder if JensenA remembers posting the above. If not I'll claim it as mine
Ensure that your com port is set as COM1 whether you are using a usb to serial adaptor or a physical com port. The software defaults to talking to COM1. I think its possible to change it to use COM2 but it is some undocumented function key, so it's easier to make sure the ECU is connected to COM1.
If you are using a post XP version of windows, you may need to run the software in compatibility mode, though I have never had a problem with it, others have.
Immobiliser off and ignition on, so that if you were to press the black button the engine would start.

Computer age is irrelevant A good USB- Serial converter is what is needed with the correct Chip set, Maplins sell them for £15 and they work fine. Just make sure when installed you set the comm port up correctly and make sure the same usb port is used each time as the driver software will be on that port.
Hi! Well i bought the lead from Steve Heath, has the usb adaptor which i have been using, but found earlier the laptop i'm using actually has a 9 pin plug in the back. So no need for the usb adaptor, could this make any difference if i take this out? Windows XP, connected via MBE(COVER OFF) to laptop, then imob off ign on, following the guide from thetvrsite.com Been off the road 8 weeks from spending hours on fiddly bits and it getting the better of me ha ha. If you have a physical com port it is likeley that it is set to COM1 by default, which would mean your USB adaptor was set to another port - hence not connecting. Try the lead direct into the 9 pin pot on the laptop.
If that doesn't connect

Check to see that the communications port is set to COM1
If not right click on it and click Properties

Plug the cable into the port that you set to be COM1
If that doesn't connect then there may be a cable problem.

Agreed, but it does make it simpler and keep other things out of the equation. I kept/keep an old windows 95 laptop in the boot of mine as part of it's tool kit. Considering you can pick one up for about £20, and it's about all it's useful for now

That is close, we're popping up all over the place ha ha. I'm in redenham? Near appleshaw. My friend lives behind the fox and said he sees a dark green one(hethinks) with black wheels sometimes go past. Mine is a blue 1997 4.2. What is yours? That would be great to check out your 4 poster sometime!! Thanks very much. Joe

The green one belongs to a friend of mine from Chute, he also has a blue chimaera. There is also a green Chim in upper chute.
I have a blue P plate Cerb and a silver Chimaera.
Cerb is in bits at the mo. When I finally sober up I am off to garage to check valve clearances.

Yup the green Chimaera is Olly's he is a good friend of mine. We can both usually be found propping up the bar in the Cricketers Tangley.

Mine is a blue P plate 4.2 AJP . Actually have not used it much this year and it has been off the road for past 3 months (nearly all back together now) so doubt you will have seen it out and about. More likely to see me kicking around in my silver Chimaera.
