NEW PICTURES ADDED
Is this tyre for the bin or ok to drive with ? 6mm tread left
Might actually be worse looking in the picture that it is, but any professional advice appreciated.
The 'tear' is approx 1 inch in length

Difficult to tell from the pic, but does that go 5mm or so into the sidewall? If so I wouldn't drive it. If it pops in a high-speed avoidance manoeuvre on the motorway it'd be messy.

if there was no sidewall bulge and you can't see the cords then I would personally superglue it back down.

Then do a double oil change just to make sure....

If that's the rim at the top of the picture then it's scrap.

I'd bin it. Not worth the risk IMO

It is, isn't it? You can see the the rusty part.

That looks like the rim-protector that's split off but it's impossible to tell from the picture (and indeed probably from looking at it too) whether it's eaten into the side-wall proper. Tyres are tough old things so it's probably fine, but on the other hand do you really want to risk it for the cost of a replacement?

Oil change, you say? That thread was funny alright hehe

I'd probably change it myself, OP. Tyre, that is.

Bin it. At great risk of sounding like a daily mail reader, you cant put a price on safety.

On the face of it (from a professional standpoint), that's fine and is just superficial.

However, depending on how it occurred, it would be worth popping the tyre off to check for any visible damage on the inside and keep a close eye on it over the next few weeks to see if a bulge appears.

I did something quite similar on mine, although the rim protector bit was a bit more pronounced on them. I took it to Kwik Fit, as I thought if anyone would try to make me have a new tyre they would! They said so long as it hadn't bulged or there were visable wires then they wouldn't advise to change.

To stop it flapping I used a bit of the vulcanised rubber from a bicycle puncture repair kit as I was concerned that superglue would react with the tyre rubber. I also put it on the rear

Looks like the rim-protector doing its job to me. If not bulging and no cords visible, I'd be happy with it. Looking at how 'flappy' it is, it clearly isn't an important 'structural' part of the tyre.

Keep a close eye on it though to see whether it changes.

If in any doubt, bin. Is it worth the risk?

OP how much is a new tire, less than 100 squid I guess. Do you think it's worth the risk?

Its the rim protector, its done its job, it'll be fine....just check it for bulges occasionally.
