Sorry I can't find the winter tyre thread. The search option doesn't seem to be working, which might be because I'm using a little tablet computer thing.
So I'm after a new set of tyres. Currently have bridgestone all weather tyres http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Bridgestone/A001...
They were fine last winter, but I'm driving to the alps and germany this winter, where the snow and ice, as well as the gradients, will be a lot more extreme. Keeping the current ones on aren't an option, they've done about 12k and are clearly on the way out. I could get the same ones again, and this might even be beneficial as I have that type of tyre on the spare wheel and its good as new.
If anyone has any ideas? I've never actually had a pair of winter only tyres so I'm not sure how much better they perform. I suppose they'd also be worse on fuel consumption? (over 3-4 thousand miles, that is actually quite important)

Changing from Conti Sport Contact 3 to our winter tyres has increased the economy by 2-3 MPG.
They don't handle as well in dryer conditions, but I can live with that and drive accordingly.
If you want to keep the tyres on all year round, then all-season make more sense but if you have space to store a spare set of wheels/tyres then having winter/summer tyres is the better option IMO.

Should have mentioned I have a set of summer tyres stored, but kept the all weather tyres on as I was pretty happy with them. No added noise, and the ride stayed more or less the same. Gave me confidence on long wet motorway hauls.
I don't mind switching tyres twice a year, but would like to be reassured that winter specifics would worth it over the all weather ones.
