clutch noise 350I S2
Discussion
Hi all took the old girl for a spin yesterday.Put her back into garage noticed a strange noise when releasing clutch pedal a sort of rumble .Asked a mate who said it could be relase bearing or input shafttood .Before i bought the car it had been standing approx 4 years. Ihave the bible .Is it possible to get the gearbox out if you cut the chassis tube and replace afterwards .Just looking at the least amount of work .The clutch was replaced approx 8 thousand miles ago. Thanks for your help Mike 350i S2
Ehmm, not nice. The release bearing is operated by a lever that has slipper pads. Should only be able to dislodge if the lever came loose from the pivot. Rare but possible. It is possible to take a peek inside if you take the dust cover of at the bottom of the bellhousing.
If it is necessary to replace the clutch etc.: block yourself for a weekend, preferably with the Friday or Monday and take the engine out. I did mine with leaving the gearbox in the car. Not too bad, especially if you have someone that can assist and help.
I left the gearbox alone to not be bothered about drive shaft, gear stick etc.
Seems that you can pull the engine enough forwards just enough to replace the clutch, but have no experience with this.
Please do not cut the chassis to win a couple of hours.
