If its the iPad 2 it will have a mic already for FaceTime.

It's an iPad 1, but I need to be able to use an external mic rather than the built in one. I also need to be able to get the file onto my PC and if there was a program that would dictate any conversation, that would be helpful.

Well, the microphone on the headphones works via the 3.5 mm jack. Not sure who things would go plugging in a mic to the 3.5. May be yes, maybe no, maybe rain, maybe snow...

Plenty of voice memo apps on the app store.

I know, but I need to record somewhere i can't put the iPad, so it needs to be a wired mic.

Looks like there is a combined mic/headphone socket this uses top ring ring sleeve to get mic nd stereo via the one socket probably something like left, right, mic, earth but check for specs if making yourself.

Or maybe just use a USB voice recorder and avoid the iPad completely?
