To get insurance in Brussels, do you need to provide the chassis/VIN number as well as the registration plate?

Thanks!

I tried to get insurance in Brussels, but my broker would only accept proper currency. Payment in Xmas day veg was unacceptable to him.

Since you need a V5 with you to take your car "sur le continent" it seems reasonable to conclude that the relevant information will be readily to hand.

I'm sorry I should have clarified. I have someone wanting to buy my car (here in the UK) and he is currently based in Brussels (Navy apparently), he's asking for the reg number AND the chassis number/VIN because he says he needs it to get insurance for it over there.

Just wanted to verify this.

If the car is registered there and sold there you need a car pass, which amongst other things includes the chassis number. You might also have to have a recent MOT, if it is to be registered in brussels. If you are importing the car for a small period of time (i think 5 or 6 months) then you dont need to register it there as long as you can prove its for your use, but I think he would need to get it on temporary plates.

I'm not sure if that is entirely correct, and I'm not sure if that applies to imported cars?

Had a quick scout around and this website might help you, notably these two pages.

But to answer your question bluntly, yes I believe he does need the chassis number.

Thank you! I've provided the details to him, I don't think he is going to register it there as he is only temporarily there with the Navy and is coming back soon.

Okay cool smile You might be able to do it as a UK sale, and then he could import it as his private vehicle for temporary use.

Its an absolute nightmare if you don't know what you are doing. My friend from germany took ages trying to work out how to use his car over here for a year, I think in the end he got specialised insurance that covered him for a year abroad.

As far as I am concerned it is a UK sale because he is flying over here to see it and buy it. I presume then he is going to drive back.

As its not a brand new car, that means he is able to bring it over as his car and get it temporalily registered on temporary plates I believe. Good news all round
