Scale Model Custom Replica.
Discussion
Hi guys,
With Christmas fast approaching and the shopping that comes with it, I've been looking around at some Diecast models for my mates. However I really want to add a twist.
All my mates are PetrolHeads and love their cars and have the odd models dotted around their house's.
What I'd like to do is get their own cars made up into models. Is there somewhere that offers a service like this?
With some it's just a matter of colour and spec, then a matter of simply painting the wheels to Black or a custom paint job on a stock set of wheel. But with others it would mean entirely different body kit (kits that are on other cars so wouldn't have to be specially made or anything)
If anyone knows where I could get some made that would be great as I think it would just be nice for Christmas to get them their own cars as models.
Thanks for reading and for any advise you can give me.
Koll.

Quite, but I think you may be underestimating the time required and also the costs involved in completely changing a model, especially the ones that require a bodykit to be added, which will probably have to be scratch made.
I'm really not trying to be a messenger of doom, but I do have experience of these things.

I would agree with Firecracker (and he should know), some things you need to consider.
1. Scale - there are many standard scales, should they be the same for each friend?
2. Availability - sort of tied to scale, but what models are available that would form the basis of the customisation.
3. If no kits\models are available are you willing to wait\pay for a scratch build? (big cost and timescales)
4. Customisation will require someone's time effort and skill and therefore will cost money and time.
A friend of mine produces pewter kits of modern military equipment in 1:152nd (1/2 the size of 1:76 or OO depending on your language), his last kit (Challenger 1) took about 6 months from sitting down with the drawings to casting it.
Sure someone could slap a bit of plastic on the back of a diecast and call it a spoiler in 10 mins, and that's what it will look like.
Why not put up a list of what would be required (prior to customisation) and the collective knowledge maybe able to help in identifying suitable models and you can take it from there.

Hmmm.... I see. Well the car with the body kit is mine so that can wait. Im just talking along the lines of getting (for example) An R8 V10 in White but with a Black Roof and Black wheels.. That could be done pretty easily no? Scale 1:18 or slightly larger.
Do you perhaps know of a company i could call in the uk and see what the quote me on time/cost?
cheers.

The customisation would be merely be down to paint for most... Ie Exterior and interior colours. 1. Scale - there are many standard scales, should they be the same for each friend?

For example :
^^ The R8 mentioned above + CF side blades (forgot about that)
A Cayman S with the standard wheels painted black but leaving spokes silver.
The only custom car that would need some kind of fabrication would be my own, which is a C2s (997) with the RUF RGT Body kit (similar to RT12 also just no rear wheel arch scoops) So i could (in theory) just buy and RT12 in the colour of mine but it doesn't exist in Green (or i can't find it)
I wouldn't mind also getting their Reg plates put on the car.
So basically i need standard car's slightly modified. All the same scale 1:18 or one size larger (£££ depending) with either 2 tone paints or custom wheel paints. For my car, i'd wait the 6months lol.
Well the good news is that something like an R8 is going to be fairly easy to find see here for example, Firecracker maybe able to help customising or finding someone else to do it.
ETA - just seen your next post - The caymen is also available in 1:18, not sure about yours tho'
It does seem do-able which is good.

Ok cool. Will PM firecracker when I get the models.
Have ordered the cayman and R8. So all I need is some custom paint.
I was wondering, if I was to get some Black wrap would it stick to the model car? Or would it just peel of? Could just wrap the roof to make it look like my mates car.

wrap film would stick to it, we used to deal with a scale model co. but can't find their details, we've done artics to motorbike scale models with all the graphics, Aston N24's etc on a nice acrylic display etc but yes all too little too late I would say for pressies for this xmas, you can do it, but it's going to take up quite a bit of your time on the run up to xmas.
You sound like a good friend to have, good on ya.
