Scrapping a Car

Hey guys,

I need to scrap a car as it failed the MOT and there appears to be bottom end damage. I don't have the money to fix it and to be honest it just isn't worth it (its a Mk1 Tigra). The car has two new tyres on it (not even covered 20 miles) that I wish to remove. However I only have 1 spare wheel, any idea if scrappies will pick it up with just 3 wheels on it?

Call them and ask. I'd imagine they'll allow you to keep all 4 wheels

Yep.

Some will bring a set of wheels with them but most just use a Hi Ab.

If they say they will return you the wheels - TAKE A £100 DEPOSIT off them otherwise they might not.

Might be worth sticking it on Ebay.

I was offered £160 if I drove my small car to a reasonably local recyclers, but the £15 increase didnt make up for the PITA from having to fit a replacement fuel pump nor offset the loss of the fuel in the tank.

They wanted to either drive ot or winch it onto a conventional six car transporter. Whether itd have all gone ahead with only three wheels is another matter...

I've used cartakeback, they're fine. £150 isn't bad for a Cinquecento which weighs well under a ton...

This is what I thought for my old going-to-work Corsa. Id be surprised if it weighed much over 900 kilos.

Conversely though, they offered a similar amount for my old 944 track day car, which is less of a good deal, with alloy wheels and engine and a 1,250+ kilogramme dry weight.

Cut a the fuel pipe to the fuel rail, open the top of the fuel pump relay and jam it closed and you can pump out the entire tank

My fuel pump had failed. I ended up lifting the rear seat, removing the fuel pump cover and assembly and syphoned out thirty five litres of fuel.

In these uncertain times you cant turn your nose up at £45-worth of petrol...

I imagine their quote generator is fairly crude and doesn't have exact weights on it. Possibly offered less because the 944 wouldn't have had a cat which is worth a bit. Did you mention on the form that it wasn't complete (stripped I assume)? That probably knocks it down a bit.

A few months after the Cinq and in a different part of the country they only offered £90 for a car a few hundred kilos heavier so I ended up palming it off on to a local company (one of the many stuffing SCRAP CARS WANTED leaflets through doors). Got £120 for it even though I'd robbed a load of bits.

Did the obligatory diesel siphoning too ... using the hand primer bulb ... took bloody ages.

I used cartakeback.com last week. Utterly painless apart from not getting a phonecall from the dismantler at the agreed time. We didnt even wait in for the guy, so there was no p1ssing around with the promised fee, it was just posted through the door when he took the car away. They do have a rep' for being ethical and not engaging in haggling too.
