which to get electric or nitro?

Nitro is great, but if it's solely for messing about, and if it's your first serious RC car, I'd go electric.
Electric RC car with brushless motor and LIPO batteries = no real maintenance, very fast and 20 minute (fairly caning it - up to 30 minutes if you're gentle on the throttle) battery runtimes. Nitro is excellent when it's working, but honestly, I've been on a lot of bashes with all sorts of people and generally those with nitro spend most of their time trying to get the car to run properly. This was, generally, my experience when I've run nitros. That said, they're far and away the best fun when they ARE working!
I've currently got a Traxxas Slash (bought the brushed version and bunged a brushless from Hong Kong into it) and an HPI E-firestorm Flux, which comes brushless. Would recommend both for first serious RCs as they're bombproof.

As has been said nitro is good when its working but it can be a right faff. It's mess too as you will spill the fuel all over the chassis plus the exhaust will drip oil.
Electric is just as fast now with lipo and brushless technology and just works, no fiddling with carb needles and it's a whole lot easier to maintain.
What sort of thing are you looking at getting? I would say off road as there is a lot more scope of places to use them. Whats your budget?

Team associated do a RTR version of their B4.1 for just over £200. I know you say you don't want to race but this will be competitive if you do want to give it a try

You will need a lipo and charger but you can pick these up pretty cheap 2nd hand from www.oople.com intact you could pick up a 2nd hand car too.
I highly recommend racing though, just driving around for no reason soon gets boring for me.

Unless you are mechanically minded, you will regret getting a nitro powered car. Not only that, but finding a place to run nitro can prove difficult too due to the noise.
Brushless and lipo are absolutely the way to go. They are fast, actually faster than nitro when accelerating, probably faster top end when you don't know what you are doing with an engine, virtually maintenance free, quieter, and in my view more fun
