I have been running a VW T5 for 4 years now and my next service if i do cam belt / water pump and some other non mot items is going to be in the region of £900. I have had a look around and trade in value is about £1500.
So its now 8 years old with 162k on the clock do i do my usual belt and braces servicing or do i run it until it blows up and scrap it ?
My mate has a polo thats now 8 years old and it never gets serviced and has never had the cam belt done

It might seem like a lot for servicing, but... If you've always serviced it, it's in good shape and you know it's reliable, surely it's worth spending (would it be cheaper at an indie?)
If you don't do it and it breaks, what else are you going to get with the £900 you've saved? Or alternatively, would anything you buy for the vans current value + £900 a) be any better or b) definitely not need money spending on it?

Not a dig at the OP, but does anyone else think it's a terrible state of affairs when it's considered cheaper/ easier to drive an 8 year old car into the ground and buy another car than to keep it going? Which is what the makers want us to, obviously.

I do think i will get the work done but talking to workmates even with newer cars they just don't bother with servicing. I was bit shocked at the trade in price and just wondered if i was just throwing money away.What a nasty selfish throw-away society we have created.
The Garage ( BMW ) didn't care about service history as it would go straight to auction

Do the belt and braces service as you say and get another 8 years out of it. At least you know the vehicle.
I'm actually shocked by the £1500 trade in, T5s seem to hold their money really well regardless of miles.
IIRC a friend of a friend still runs a T4 which must be well past 300K by now, looks tatty put he thought it better to hold onto than spend 20K on a new one.

ks!If you service the T5 and then pop it up for sale privately in March/April next year you will get the money you spent back + quite a bit more.
I'd pay £2500 (which was the PX value + service costs) for a T5 that had just been refreshed and well serviced, in the knowledge that I would be able to run it for 2-3 years at least without losing money.

Absolutely. The thought of scrapping a 8 year old vehicle is beyond me. My Lexus is 17 next year and I can see me spending a few quid on it and keeping it well past it's 20th birthday. I'm well past thinking that a car with 100K is 'done'What a nasty selfish throw-away society we have created.
Plenty of folk on here running older cars or stuff with bonkers mileage.

A local indy quoted me £300 to do the cambelt on my Golf mk5 a few months ago. For a VW transporter the job is not too disimilar, should be able to get it done for a similar price methinks? FWIW did the job myself in the end changed belt and pump and coolant (bought a set of locking tools) for under £180.
