Nice Sunday lunch near Newbury

Meeting the in-laws somewhere in the Newbury area for lunch on Sunday and usually get good recommendations from PH so here goes!

After a nice country pub, child friendly. Doesn't need a Michelin star but not after a Harvester either!

Had spotted this place but it's fully booked (yes, know we've left it rather late!)

Have a look at The Carnarvon Arms in Highclere, eaten there a few times and been suitably impressed.

The George & Dragon in Wolverton Townsend down the A339 just past Kingsclere.

Very good food and it's a lovely old inn with low wooden beams etc (mind your head!!!) and an open fire - 2 in fact!

+1 used to eat in there on a friday when I worked in burghclere. Lovely food and not too pricey

I do like Sun in the Wood. Especially their sticky toffee pudding

Not been to the Carnarvon Arms for a while, but I recall that too being nice.

I've not been myself, but I'm also told the Winterbourne Arms does very good food.

Its nice but we were there today and the food was ok. It looked much better than it was. Also, they may have 2 open fires but only 1 was lit today and everyone had huddled around the other.

Booked into The Yew Tree as most were fully booked for the time we're after.

Had sunday lunch at The Yew Tree a couple of weeks ago. Definitely a "gastro pub" not a boozer's palace; was owned by Marco Pierre-White until recently. Anyway, had a very good roast sunday lunch apart from slightly burnt yorkshire puddings. Good winelist too.

I'd have had it down as more restaurant than pub. It's not really one to drop in on for a pint!
We go there quite a bit and it's always been very good. +1 on the winelist too.

Always had good food here and in my opinion it has improved since Marco`s split, that could just be coincidence though.

I think you`ll prefer it to The Pot Kiln unless you are a particular fan of game?
