Considering whether to buy a 993 tip. Have seen a couple in classifieds. One catches the eye, which is just sub 100k miles. And is a tip, but looks very well sorted by the sound of things. And at a price of just over 15k seems a lot less than the manuals. I have owned tips in past, so what is the 993 tip box really like?

Hi,
I've had a 993 tip in the past which was great around town etc., but because it is only a 4-speed, it always felt like it needed another gear on the motorway etc.

You really need to drive one because we're all different, but personally, I would'nt buy another 993 tip.

I've had a 993 tip for the last 7 years. Rarely drive it in anything other than full auto mode - it's too easy to be lazy about it

Feel sorry for all concerned if the car wasn't stolen.

It is highly likely a young lad would be in the wrong in an Evo. Local to me 4 lads were killed in a sporty astra at night. Press blamed lads only to find later the other driver was at fault!

There seems to be a lot of this cross thread dressing going on at the moment!

(WTF is the above reply about??)

I have a 993 Tip and glad I have. Yes the purists will insist on a manual but drive one around town for a considerable period and you soon become hacked off.

If its not a daily driver, will be used outside the city and you can cope with the offset driving position long heavy clutch then go for it.

Tip box is 4 speed has a lot of flexibility when used in tiptronic could be considered agricultural by todays standards but does the job especially how the converter lock operates to effectively sub-divide the gears below 3000rpm. Given that MB made it I would consider it bulletproof in terms of reliability.

I was unsure about the tip but as i couldnt afford a manual i went for it anyway, and have not looked back, its easy smooth and fast when you need it, I admit ive not taken it on the track where a manual would prove usefull, but for everyday driving its superb and on todays raods all you ever need, my next car a 996 tt will also be auto, good luck in your search
