Possibly the most un-PH car going, but here goes...

My girlfriend's going to look at a 2005 1.4 Renault Megane tomorrow and was just wondering the general consensus on them? Anything in particular to watch out for, etc?

It's got 59,000 miles, and I believe the next service (72k miles) is the cambelt replacement. From a minor amount of research it seems the average main dealer price for this would be in the region of £1k (:O). Obviously, you'd have to be crazy to take it to a main dealer, so any idea roughly what an indy would charge?

Other than that, any thoughts?

ETA: It has 'well documented service history' which I presume means 'part service history'.

The stupid hand brake lever will break. If the airbag light comes on check the connectors under seats. Buy a Focus or Astra.

She hates both.

Managed to find a different one for the same price. Same age, full service history, 36k miles and the same options. The original question still applies, though. smile

Does she like the hard shoulder? Not normally a French hater but these are pretty bad.

Lad I work with has one. Give him nothing but bother (mainly electrical faults & sensors) and only manages around 30mpg. On the plus side they're very safe cars and have quite decent interior.

Just reading HonestJohn's review of it, which is hardly glowing either...

If she must then get a 1.6, it is a heavy car and the economy of the smaller engine is terrible

The 1.4 is not a great engine. Terrible on fuel, low on power and not cheap on tax.

Do you know what trim level it is?

You need to check that all of the electric windows work, that the heaters work on all fan settings (1-4) and that the air con works.

If you get one that's been looked after very well they can be lovely cars, if you get a bad one it will cost you a fortune.

I personally wouldn't buy anything other than s facelift diesel (86bhp with 5 speed box or the better 106bhp with the 6 speed box which both fall into the £30 tax bracket, provided they don't have a sunroof) and I'd only have a Dynamique.

How much is she looking at spending;

I actually run a 2006 "new shape" clio with the same engine, and it is slow in that to be honest (and pants economy!). That said it has been 100% reliable (from new) so far and a good little shopping car.

I also ran a Megane II with the 1.6 engine - do not touch it with a barge pole - great car when it worked but costs were stupid for a "cheap" everyday car, had lots of issues (mechanical and electical) - worst car I ever had - and I traded in my lovely little fezzer for it frown

We're just selling our 1.6i Megane, it'll appear on this site tomorrow night but feel free to message me if it's of interest (late 2004, 50k miles, full leather and climate in metalic dark blue)

We're selling the car because it's plain slow. A 1.6 Focus etc a much nicer drive. Other than that they're very good. Coil packs go constantly, though that's only 1 bolt and £20 a go. Otherwise it's very reliable.

On the plus side, most are of a very high spec. Ours is a dynamique which means it came with keyless go, parking sensors, auto lights and electrics all round as standard, leather and climate control, added to ours while ride comfort, safety and all that dull stuff is top draw.

Personally, I like them, however I don't think there's a decent engine in the range, the petrols lacking torque and the diesel lacking an ability to hold itself together

A colleague had a 1.6 '55 plate and it is literally the most troublesome normal car I've ever heard about. He got shot of it at about 75k miles after it cost him over £3k in repairs over the 2.5 years he owned it.

Although isn't the 1.9 diesel supposed to be quite good?

Check if the headlights work.

If a bulb's blown, the front bumper has to come off.

Aside from 2 coil packs, meaning that all 4 have now been replaced, ours has been flawless over 10k miles. My best mate Laguna diesel is 100% relible and now on 120k.

I wonder if it's the way they're treated? Can't imagine they respond well to a thrashing!

Not true. You only need remove the front wheel and break your arm and wrist in a couple of places and it's easy to sort. Seriously, it's a st design on the lights but you can get round it. Someone I know had Halfords fit them for £9.99. In winter. In the rain. Poor shop assistant

We now only buy and sell Megane 2's that we have either supplied or serviced ourselves due to the bad ones being so bad. The good ones are the well looked after and well maintained ones.

The 1.5 diesel is by far the best engine available IMO.

the 1.4 is probably sluggish as hell.

^^^ This is one of the most pita things I have ever had to deal with (on a mate's car). People question my alfa's reliability, but it's been pretty flawless over 4 years. Every person I know that's bought a renault or a peugeot have had serious issues with them, trips to the garage, electrical / CPU flaws stranding the car at the roadside, windows sticking, stereos failing etc etc.

She'll have less hassle with an Alfa 147 and that's saying something.

You can't see the irony in stating that people question the reliability of Alfas but yours is fine, before going on to claim that all renault and peugeots will break

Op I work in the breakdown recovery industry. Take a guess which car I go out to the most, regardless of what engine it has.
