Hartech low temperature thermostat?
Discussion
We're looking at getting a hartech t-stat fitted at the cars next service in January. The opinion seems to be pretty divided on these? Obviously Baz @ hartech has huge experience in this field and there are obvious advantages, but I seem to remember reading something about increased wear with lower running temperature of the engine?
Any owners past experiences would be great, and perhaps someone who could dismiss these concerns about increased wear with the lower running temperature/longer time it takes to warm the car up. Perhaps even Baz could chime in if he has time?
Hope I haven't opened a can of worms here.

I notice that LN engineering also offer something like this (same or different) and a magnetic oil plug.
Does the magnetic plug just collect the metal fragments from the oil so that if you removed it you could see damage. Is this the same as the early warning system that was discussed before but without an alarm to tell you the plug has fragments on it??

I was going to get mine done while doing the Gold service (to get accepted on to the Hartech warranty), but they where out of stock at the time. Since then I’ve read a few contradictory articles, so would also be very interested in finding out the answer to this.
Not sure if I should wait till next years service (in Sep) or book it in earlier, as I’m actually doing damage on a daily basic.

Have a read of this thread. Yes it's quite long, but it was pretty interesting for the most part.
If you think that is long Matt - wait till you try and wade through section 5 of our buyers guide (all about cylinder scoring). I should wait though as I am just in the middle of revising it and making it even longer.
Please however don't run away with the idea that I simply love spending hours writing about stuff that I already know the answers to - it is in fact getting in the way of serious work on our racing cars for next season and other developments.
It is just because I have not only worked out and tested and proven the causes but recently have been involved with an oil company recently (to develop and test new oils for this problem) and their research confirms my findings as well. Furthermore some recent new developments (yet to be announced) have added more weight to the subject.
It is however complex and has taken several thousand words and a few photos and drawings to fully explain - I hope to post this revised version before Christmas.
Although you would probably need an hour or so to read it all (if you can manage it in one go) - a headache pill afterwards and a rest - I doubt anyone will have any doubts about the quality of the research or of the benefits of fitting a low temperature thermostat.
I must have missed any adverse comments but perhaps they would be best aired after the new version has been made available and read and then perhaps those doubters would like to pick holes in the research, outcome and conclusion.
No one that I have had the opportunity to explain personally has any doubts as to the benefits (including oil company experts, engine designers and technical journalists) but I think there are some people who just like to be controversial or don't like anyone else getting any attention - and pick a different point of view just for the sake of it.
However - anyone not bothering to read and fully digest it all may well think they know better until they do.
I will post on here when the new version is on line.

Hi Baz, I look forward to reading it. I already agree that the lower temperature thermostat is a worthwhile modification to afford the engine the opportunity to run cooler. The only reason why I haven't been in touch to buy one is because I sold the car a little while ago. Hmm - some very interesting suggestions on this thread.
My conclusion is that the oil / thermostats seem to be such an easy fix, why hasn't there been a group buy for the thermostats (and fitting instructions for those of us that live miles away) with Hartech? Baz would you be interested?
Mark.

But surely for you, the big question is 'can I get more MPG by getting one??'Not sure if I should wait till next years service (in Sep) or book it in earlier, as I’m actually doing damage on a daily basic.

We had to buy several hundred already (they are usually manufactured in thousands) but do supply for customers to fit and I will prepare a fitting instruction list over Christmas for anyone interested.
Regards,
Father Christmas
(AKA Baz) not free though.
"Several hundred"? Regards,

Not expecting them for free (although that would be nice).

Fitting instructions appreciated
