"UK unemployment rose by 128,000 in the three months to October to 2.64 million, the highest level since 1994.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the jobless rate was 8.3%, up from 7.9% in the previous quarter.

Very little sign of the private sector employment picking up.

Not unexpected was it?

Given the increaed population it's not a record by any menas and will get worse in any case.

Tough for those without jobs but unavoidable.

I went to a job interview this morning, so some people must still be desperate for workers.

What I would be interested in is what % of this is due to shifting people back into the correct catagories?

We know that Labour massaged the unemployment figures for years by shifting as many as possible into other catagories such as disabled and I thought the Cons were attempting to shift as many of these back as possible.

Is it 1% or 10%?

Does anywhere state the employment figures (i.e. are there more or less IN work)?

Just because unemployment is up, doesn't mean employment is necessarily down.

from the linked article

....
The total number of people of all ages in employment fell by 63,000 compared with three months earlier, to 29.11 million.

That was largely driven by 67,000 job losses in the public sector. The private sector added just 5,000 jobs over the same period.

I updated my CV on a Sunday night and had 4 calls from agencies the following day, 1 interview lined up by Wednesday and another by the following Monday.

I'm not exactly highly skilled either so either it's not as bad as they are making out or I'm bloody lucky.

Well I am desperately trying to recruit 2 full time developers and a Business Analyst so I can knock three of that list if I ever get a decent candidate!

Although our recruitment is currently on hold, this is how it has been for most of the last two years for us. There are lots of candidates around who seem to think they are more capable than they really are. We've really struggled sifting through the junk that comes from the agencies. We've tried multiple agencies but they all suffer from the same problem, the agents are not technical enough to understand our skill requirements.

Yes very much the same issue.... I am looking for two good PHP, MySQL application devs for web based app development for a new venture and no matter how many times I say I want AppDev experience not pure WebDev 80% of CV's are pure web designers!

It is now moving from annoying to fekking infuriating!

Where abouts are you? I should stay where I am for a bit longer, but one day...

I've always found agencies to be useless. I know which positions I should be put forward for, they think they know better. I've provided my CV to agencies the last few 'times' and always found a job with next to no effort before they've even got started.

Just been listening to various political bods on the radio talking about this.

Am I missing something when the Leftists say that the job losses in the public sector not being picked up by the private sector just means one more person calming benefits and not paying tax.

Surly any given person in the public sector is paid out of taxes in the first place, so unless they were being paid less than they are going to get on benefits, its a net gain for the tax payer? Am I missing something fundamental here?

No you aren't missing anything, it is just people don't like to say it is cheaper to have someone on the dole than public sector worker. Labour know this and try to capitalise on it.

If you are bored there is a debate on it right now on BBC Parliament

Well considering the level of some benefits they will probably be better off!

However I have always thought that while they statistically shift to the unemployment figures and will be contributing less in spending (assuming they are on less benefits than they were salary!) the actual raw net fiscal effect of shifting someone from the Public Sector to being on benefits is very little.

Any half decent ITer can be up to speed in ANYTHING within a few weeks - makes more sense than having a position vacant for months or years!

May I ask if you're offering, say, £10k PA 8am to 7pm including some weekend hours and prefer a PhD with 10 years' experience? As I often see similarly ridiculous jobs being advertised.
