Its a sad time for me, I feel I have no choice but to disown him...

He's 18 and passed his test about 8 months ago but yesterday was the 1st time he gave me a lift and im sad to say he is the driver everyone hates.

1st thing, driving along a 40 mph dual carriageway just after a roundabout and he noticed a guy come round in the outside lane doing about 50 about to overtake... "whats this guy playing at speeding!" my brother says, he then pulls out into the 2nd lane at about 36 to prevent anyone from speeding :O i couldnt believe it.

2nd thing, completely cuts up some guy whilst being in the wrong lane at a roundabout and calls the other guy a wanger!! I said to him what are you doing and he said the guy was in the wrong lane??? my brother was in the left lane, 2 lanes on, 2 lanes off then tried to turn right (3rd exit)!! the other guy was attempting to enter in the 2nd lane and go straight on assuming my brother was going left or straight on.

3rd thing, he sits at about 5 mph under the speed limit everywhere because he thinks there are traffic police around evry corner solely to catch him doing 32 in a 30!

all in all I am horrified to say this driver is part of my family :'(

I would be inclined to say that it's the arrogance of youth, (being only 23 myself), but now is the high-time you instil a decent driving attitude in him. Show him the error of his ways etc.

Then, if he still doesn't listen, disown him.

Maybe have a word with him before disowning him?

I have a friend that sounds pretty similiar absolutely no understanding of how lanes on a roundabout work, he seems to think you stay in any lane entering the roundabout and once your on there its a free for all.
I now refuse to go anywhere with him if I know theres a roundabout on the journey.

tell him that if you drive slightly too slow then the police assume you're pissed and stop you anyway.

Drive slightly too quickly and the police admire your confidence and leave you alone.

Otherwise disown him.

The best I can advise is to buy him a book called Roadcraft for Christmas. Clicky

I had a mate that used to be a MLM until I questioned him on it, putting across the correct name for the 2 ourside lanes being in fact overtaking lanes. He gave me a bking the other day for highlighting it as he too now gets wound up by MLM's biggrin

Could be worse, but I know how you feel - I think it's down to experience and you can now see why insurance is so high for younger drivers. I'm sure a lot of younger drivers can handle faster cars responsibly, however the vast majority (despite what they say) cannot.

It only takes some a bit of showing off, ignorance towards your fellow driver or lack of respect for mother nature and the inevitable crash will occur.

Is he the kind that doesn't like to back down in an argument even though he knows he is clearly wrong? If so, it'll probably be the same with the driving. frown

Odd - at 18 I was sure I was invincible and speed limits were for mere mortals.

Does he have AIDS?

Did you try to educate him? If done in a positive unconfrontational way you can change his y ways.

Show him the error of his ways? We weren't all great drivers at 18.

Oh yeah it does state in original post banghead Sorry...

Its good to see an 18 year old male who doesn't want to drive like a complete knob head. Ok, he's still getting used to driving, but is it really that big a deal that he's nervous on dual carriage ways and round abouts? Also, hes sensible to stick to the speed limit, its very easy to get 2 sp30's and then have to take the lessons and test again.

Perhaps if there were a few more males who drove a little bit more sensibly, there wouldn't be loads of threads moaning about why young driver insurance being so high... But perhaps thats another thread completely.

TBH, this is a little bit of a non-thread imo...

OP, have you taking him to your local Halfords for a cruise yet? rolleyes
