I'm looking at getting a commuter ready for the spring, to keep me going in between my road riding.

I've got around £1k to spend and currently leaning towards a Croix de Fer as I ideally want it for a general run around too.

What commuter would/do you ride?

I had a Croix De Fer that I bought for using through the winter instead of the road bike. I only recently flogged it, and the reason being is that it weighed an absolute tonne!

Fantastic bike but more a tourer than a commuter. If I were you I'd look at a cyclocross bike.

Is it really that bad?

What CX bikes would you be recommending?

kenesis crosslight and the kona jakes are good value for money but to be honest, a ribble audax/winter trainer would do the job just as well. 7005 alu and some carbon forks to take the sting out of the holes and bumps. you can probably find some forks with fitments for canti brakes easily enough.

off the peg cx bikes these days tend to be quite poor, the cynic in me would say that the manufacturers have spotted another gap in the market and are pushing it hard....

i've got a genesis vapour as my commuter over ride, path and bridleway. i think there's a 2012 model vapour with disc brakes if that's what does it for you, or they do one with canti's. the frames are alumnium with carbon forks, so it is light. my 2011 model is in stealth black. looks rather good!

highly recommended, and it's british!

Boardman Team CX & Cube Cross Race look the best value cross bikes for £1k to me at the moment. Both come with discs.

Cotic Roadrat: http://www.cotic.co.uk/product/bikes/roadrat/geare...

I use one for commuting and it's a good bit lighter than a colleague's Croix de Fer. Similar price point, main difference being flat v drop bars. I've added barends and CX tyres to mine and have a very stretched out riding position, reasonably efficient on-road but very controllable off-road:

(usually wearing SKS chromoplastics but I'd removed them for a 'cross race - never again)

Yes the CDF weighed an absolute bomb. Coming from a full on road bike you really feel it. I found it really slows you down on the climbs. On the plus side it was very comfortable bike and supple and I guess the extra weight would help with fitness.

In the end I went for a Cannondale SuperX which blew the budget somewhat, however it is excellent and I'm glad I bought it. I'd say it was very nearly as quick as a dedicated road bike if you fit skinnny tyres. I fitted 25c tyres, mudguards and a decent set of lights to make it what I think is the ultimate commuter.
