I collected my car from a main dealer today (after they had closed) to find 20 more miles on the clock after some warranty service work. The battery was disconnected during the service which must have reset the trip computer, to support the fact that the car was driven this distance after the service. The fuel light was on too.

Is this acceptable or worth complaining about?

What was the warranty work? If it needed a decent road test before and after repair, I wouldn't have said 20 miles is too much given the right circumstances.

It may have been idling in the workshops for a while during the day, using more fuel.

Wouldnt bother to be honest.

It would have been road tested for the warranty work. Possibly to ensure its correctly repaired?

what was done, just a service, nothing that needed testing like clutch, brakes, coolant change.

Ive know dealers to take them on a fair few miles so it up to working temp for a reasonable period of time.

It was in for repairs to the rear floorpan so a big job - nevertheless I had previously gone to collect the car and rejected it as the tracking wasn't set properly and it was filthy inside. At that point I drove 3 miles before returning it to the dealer (i've just checked the distance on google), and when i collected it today there were 22 miles on the trip computer, so they'd done another 19 miles to check the tracking was ok..

as said before> what work was done?

if it didn't warrant a test drive, then I would complain. 20 miles would actually take a while, a mechanic wouldn't spend so long in a car unless it was really necessary

If it wasn't an M3 I wouldn't mind but can't help thinking they were tempted to take it on a slightly longer test drive than was necessary.

Probably took it home to check it was ok
Why worry about 20 miles?

Ah tracking, Probaly going on road test to ensure the wheel is straight and not puling etc.

As long as your happy with the repairs then leave it at that I reckon

tracking... sounds fair enough to me.

next time get something like this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IR-Car-Vehicle-dash-dash...
so you can see if they take it out, and how they drive it!

I was told BMW had stopped replacing the rear floorpans on E46's, how did you get yours authorised ?.

I got one for mine, and though the quality isn't brilliant, it has actually been really useful!

only records when there is activity if you want, but you can leave it on so will record in the middle of the night if someone walks past. would also get the reg plate of a hit and run, or help you out in court if you get hit by another car.

pretty good for £20, though the nightvision bit doesn't work in the car, as the IR light reflects off the window frown does work when you hold it outside though which is pretty fun. took the dog for a walk the other night just using this rather than a torch. felt like bravo-2-zero! (I know sad or what!)

Don't believe what you're told - every dealer has a different story but BMW are definately authorising repairs on E46s under 10 years old. It took a bit of ringing around to find the right dealer. See my thread here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Extra miles gained don't seem excessive to me. I'd be peeved off about the lack of fuel...take it, wasn't much left in the first place.

I think it had just under a quarter of a tank when I dropped it off.

How far away is the bodyshop from the dealer?

Thanks, I was looking at a 01 touring and the 10 year cut off came up, guess I'd be ok if I buy an 02 then.
