Why does Britain have more children in workless households..
Discussion
......than anywhere else in Europe? And what family policy should we have?"

I just had a read of this blog, and I was stunned by some of those graphs - but not surprised. Since coming back to the UK, my wife has had no problems finding work, and even my 17 year old step daughter has plenty of work via an agency. But looking at the graphs, I can understand why so many do not want to work (I know we do have a real economic problem, and people are losing their jobs, but things were never as rosey as the government made out, even in the good times):

"We didn’t think we had an unemployment crisis back in 2004 – in fact commentators were writing about "full employment". But we were wrong. The numbers that are published most regularly and get the most attention – the blue band at the bottom representing Job Seekers Allowance – are only a part of a much bigger picture.
We need to handle the numbers on those claiming Job Seekers Allowance with particular care now. The last Labour government (rightly) started trying to divert people from incapacity benefits and Income Support onto to Job Seekers Allowance. For example, the point at which lone parents are are asked to move from Income Support to Job Seekers fell in steps between 2008 and 2010. As a result the number of lone parents on income support fell from 738,000 in May 2008 to 595,000 in May 2008 – a big drop despite the recession.
So part one of the answer to the question in the title of this blog is that we have high unemployment, and have had for a long time."

more children = more benefits
Council scum!
I live on a council estate and have seen and heard it myself.
When I was about 15/16 my mates and I were talking to some of the local scallies. We got talking about the future etc when they both said that they just wanted to get pregnant and get a "free" house!
One of said girls now has 2 kids and the other 1! Can't comment if they did get the free house as, surprising, we didn't keep in contact.

Looky Looky at where Greece is on that list! Perhaps we should be the nation that people say want to sit on our arses and have someone else pay for us, not the Greeks.
Not good, where did this start?
I think some of these people need monitoring devices on their nobs so when pokey pokey happens the device tightens and the DWP/DSS are automatically informed. No worky, no pokey.

A mate of mine works and doesn't claim disability and he's blind FFS. He gets a dog and other gadgets from the RNIB but other than that, he works for it all.
Had a programmer mate like that he used a brail board to read the line of code he was on and did everything from memory, truly amazing to see him work, he brought his dog to work who would sit under his desk all day quietly. He loves his job and think thats what kept him going.Unfortunately the 'incapacity' number has been pushed up for years, even dates back to pre blair, people on long-term unemployment were encouraged to go on to incapacity as a way to reduce the unemployement figures.
This was then taken advantage off over the years by all the feckless workshy folk and successive govts each trying to fudge the figures results in the situation we have now.

Ask why there are no new stats http://www.dsdni.gov.uk/incapacity_benefit
Then look at the decline through to feb when the new assessment scheme came in place and you will have your answers I believe.
