Honda EV-STER headed for production...

...At least that's what Honda CEO Takanubo Ito says

Honda's dinky EV-STER electric sports car concept from the Tokyo show could make its debut as a production car during 2012. And there could even be a petrol version on the cards alongside the all-electric model

Honda boss Takanubo Ito, in an interview with German car mag Auto Motor und Sport, revealed the production plans for the car, although he didn't go into much specific detail about the rear-wheel-drive roadster.

Seems that the EV-STER (presumably in both petrol and electric form) is part of Honda's drive to cut its range-wide CO2 emissions by 30 per cent by 2020. "CO2 reduction is the biggest challenge for Honda," Ito told the magazine. "Over the next three years the number one focus at Honda will be to minimise fuel consumption."

Not sexy stuff, we admit, but if that brings about a 21st-century take on the Honda Beat as well as a new NSX, we won't be complaining...

Lovely thumbup Here's hoping it injects some fun back into Honda's range and handles as well as the new Toybaru.

Oh, and the price - it needs to cost less than a tuppence idealy otherwise it will be a flop.

Looks great.

I emailed Honda to see if they were going to produce a hybrid 2 seater based on the CR-Z and they said they had no plans for any form of electric 2 seater. Doh.

Given that the CR-Z is 1200kg and reasonably brisk I would have thought shortening the wheelbase (by ditching the stupid rear seats) and lightening (by shedding the roof/less bodywork etc) could easily result in a ~1000kg roadster with MX5/MR2 type power/weight and much better economy.

Seems like they're going to do someting similar so good move Honda

Not too bad looking, it's hard to get an idea of scale from those pics. I remember seeing pics of the Renault Wind, then was surprised to see how tiny it was in real life.

Hell no! Please don't be tiny, if it is anywhere near the size of the Wind, then that's far too small! If you want tiny & cheap, buy a Suzuki Cappuccino. As for the EV version, well when was the last time you saw a cheap electic car?

I don't mean the external size of the car. I just meant that it can fit people over 6' tall.
