Need help on what to get for a first car/van. Budget would realistically be sub £1,000. It's the insurance that's the killer. Anything considered.

Much appreciated

Lewis.

Whats your age bigman?

Anyways .....Astra van , fastest thing out there , great for chasing the neds with.

French cars used to be more gentle on insurance , 205 gti on a classic limited mileage policy?

i found astra vans didnt really have that much usuable load space, very long and thin

id be looking at pug partners and similar, the 1.9d goes pretty well, and has a good loadspace in the back

18 mate, i've been looking at them although when i go to get quotes they are always sky high.

My dads mate suggested getting a classic, i'll look into it. Cheers.

why not look at a Ford KA van!?

Go Kart handling + lighter weight in van spec.

you'll beat most things in the 1st 2 gears as long as your quick off the mark, but pretty much screwed once you get past 30mph and into 3rd gear!

biggrin

Just how quick are they??

OP - something unusual that is low risk will be your best bet. What about a mk2 Mondeo if you can find a good one? Remember to add both your parents on as named drivers, will help a lot on the insurance front.

not stricly acurate these days, the mrs use to go that route, her dad has been driving for 30+ years and has just about as many years NCB, yet when she tried getting insurance with him as a named driver this year it increased the policy ammount on a few quotes!? bizzare to say the least.

mind you, when i renewed mine, it increased the policy amount also by trying to add voluntary excess to my policy, even more bizzare i think! no?, thanksfully i now have no excess to may instead of volunteering £250! biggrin

OP best to shop around and find those that will help reduce the cost by having parents as drivers. but avoid Direct lines 'named drivers build up their own NCB', its a bunch of bull, i got stung with it after being with them for 3 years, thinking i was getting 3 years of my own NCB, but its only valid off a new quote with them! sneaky bds!

i'm not looking to go onto my parents policy, i'd rather just start building up my NCB.

I guess you just have to give it a go and see what happens - my parents take my insurance down from £1900 to £800 smile

Insurance makes no sense to me at all, at 19 my 1.8 Mondeo would have cost more than my current 2.5 V6 one, not that I am complaining hehe

I meant add them as named drivers to your policy.

Oh right, would this make much of a difference?

Like I said in my above post, adding both my parents on as named drivers (they hardly ever use the car) reduces my premium from £1900 to £800 a year. Well worth looking into!

Def look into the older gen cars as im sure they are easier on the wallet , however being 18 is going to be harsh for any quote.

I remember performance direct told me when i turned 21 there would be a big difference , then when i turned 21 they said.....ah but sir when you turn 25 theres a lower premium.

Limited mileage policies can be good , but they have important stipulations included , bear that in mind.
