I was driving up the M1 Northbound this morning (the 4 lane bit before the Luton roadworks with the variable speed limit) and overtook a Mercedes van with a single camera sticker on the rear. It appeared to be a mobile speed checker which is a bit sneaky. It was also on the 3rd lane of 4 to capture the outside lane speeders!! Hopefully I will be OK as my speedo was reading just under 80!!

Six weeks ago, mrs k & I were on the M4 travelling to visit my parents in South Wales.

Now, every time we exit the A449 and enter the M4 West the amount of middle-lane-moronity between Newport and Pyle never, ever fails to amaze us. As such, we spend much of our time in L1 at 0.80 leptons passing others in L2 doing between 0.65 and 0.70 (most of the time, I can't be arsed doing a three lane sweep to pass them).

Anyway.

On a four-lane stretch past the Bridgend exit, there was a scamera on the bridge over the M-Way. In lane 3 (of 4) was a driver doing about 0.60, whilst I was doing about 0.85 in L1 as we approached the bridge and said camera.

As I passed Mr MLM (or L3M in this case), mrs k asked if we'd be nipped by the van on the bridge. I said that the van would be concentrating on L4, so we'd be fine.

Six weeks later? No NIP.

Was it Nietsche or Confuscious who said "I hope you get from life what you deserve"?

I had circa a mile and a half of clear M-Way in front of me to exploit, at a speed that aligns with most other M-Way users.

Are you a MLM?

No.
Are you someone who has poor lane discipline? Yes.

I take it from your answer that you think what you deserve is bad; interesting.

Lol! I am sorry but I am with Kiteless, I have to use this stretch of motorway alot and the sheer fkwittery of the middle lane users is mind boggling, so much so it is easier to stay in lane 1 most of the time.

As for poor lane discipline, technically he is using the correct lane for driving in, the MLM in lane 2 have the poor lane discipline, they are not overtaking so should not be in that lane, and if it safe to pass on the left I don't see the problem with it, I think it should be law if I am honest, Americans can manage it, why can't we?

Half the time they don't even notice you go by on the left anyways

EFA.

I have a theory that any more than 3 lanes on a motorway seriously confuses your average British driver. Consider exhibit A, the stretch of the M25 they've widened between the M1 turn-off and the M40. Even when it's relatively quiet down there, you'll still have cars sat in L3 and L4 doing 65 maximum. This leaves the discerning motorist with only three choices:

1) Undertake
2) Drive an inch from their bumper with full beams on until they get the message (the preferred option of most A3 S-Line drivers)
3) Sit behind them and wait for them to move over, thus compounding the issue and making oneself appear to be exhibiting the same disregard for motoring in general and lane discipline in particular.

So which do you go for? Yes, undertaking is undesirable, but we need to sort out the root cause; to whit, O and MLMs.

As we seem to have gone wildly off topic on this I will further divert.

Why does the Govt not invest in a campaign to educate people on how to use Motorways and Dual Carriageways properly? We all know that Mr or Mrs average driver do not understnad the concept of keeping left unless overtaking and as a consequence we suffer higher than necessary congestion, road rage and probably dangerous driving.

If the Government were to come up with some TV ads and also utilise dorment gantry signs to display educational messages "keep left " the drving world would hopefully be a lot more pleasurable for all.

Just to divert back on topic for a moment...
Yes, that's what I thought - but this one was different. It had sensors on the roof and I'm pretty sure it was monitoting as it went along. I suppose it would be technically possible for it to 'know' it's own speed and monitor prevailing traffic. Early speed cameras were set on car dashboards and did a similar thing.

they did back in the days of the first motorway's, but as my dad was still in nappy's then and my mother was yet to be conceived. I cant comment on if it was any good.

Well - as nobody else has yet mentioned it, I'll state the obvious: ANPR cameras. No-one makes a speed camera which is approved for use from a moving vehicle, AFAIK.

Too many variables.

About 20 years ago Nottingham Police were testing in-car cameras which had been developed in Germany and 'clocked' overtaking cars on the M1. The units were calibrated to know the speed of the vehicle they were in and the relative speed of the overtaking vehicle, so to calculate the 'target' vehicle's speed. To be fair, I think these early models may have just indicated the speed rather than actually taking a photo but the technology can't be that difficult!!

How have I missed this fourth lane? I drive it every day and have never noticed it.
