Need a advice from IT Professionals
Discussion
Hi,
I have got a job offer from a company and wondering if someone in the software development field can advice me if this would be good move for me if i accept the job offer?
Current Job:
- Currently working in well known logistic company as a junior software developer for last 3.5 years
- Salary is 25k and would get 5% raise in April 2012.
- Guy i am working with is very experience and has got about 20yrs experience in development. So we are doing things very professionally.
- There is no career progression in the company becuase IT Setup is very small just two of us.
- Things are moving very slowly from past 6-8 months and not much work coming in, i have to keep asking my senior for a work. I don't know if its normal in every company.
- I have already discussed about the new offer with my line manager and he said that we can't match this offer but he would like me to stay in the company. He also said that if this a good opportunity for my career then he won't stop me.
- People are very nice here but there is no career progression and salary is not very good but my job is secure.
-------------------------------------
New offer
- New offer is from the company who provides clinical services. Its a medium size company but financially they are very good.
- They are offering me good salary package so monthly i can bring £300 to £500 pound extra at home.
- I will have to look after their software systems and i will be a only person in the software development team so its a senior level position as compare to where i work now.
- There won't be much work to do in the future in this role but my job would be secure here.
--------------------------------------
To sum this up, i would say
Pros: Money + Senior level role (it would increase my confidence)
Cons: There won't be much work to do in the future
I don't know if its worth moving for few hunderd pounds?

My concern would be:
Cons: There won't be much work to do in the future
Not much work to do = rapidly getting bored (there's only so many books you can read).
Thought about trying to find another position but for the same money and with more developers you can learn off? Sure, it's nice to be able to have some autonomy and to do things yourself but I find it's often good to do pair programming / peer code reviews and you'll find that you'll always learn new things from people.
Just my 2c but I'd probably not accept that role.

So, reading this, you feel that your current situation is secure - even though there are times when you don't have much work to do. What makes you think that the situation is secure?- Currently working in well known logistic company as a junior software developer for last 3.5 years

Is there any particular reason why you are pegged as a junior developer yet you've been there for 3 years?
What kind of career progression are you wanting?
You're quite lucky to be able to discuss this with your line manager so openly.

I thought about clinical services as a possibility earlier in the year and had a chat with my brother about it (he used to be a PM in that area). According to him the area is pretty much saturated with systems & products. - New offer is from the company who provides clinical services. Financially secure company doesn't mean your job's safe - it just means that the company shareholders don't appear to have anything to worry about for the moment.
You're going to be the only person responsible for a system which you don't know, in a company which you don't know. A BIG buck will stop with you. Are you ready for it? Have you thought about what all that means & implies?
Without further details it seems strange that the company's got a system with only 1 person working on it - have they been winding down the development work on the system and are simply milking the cash cow?
Have you come about this new job through networking (ie have some good insight into the company) or via an agency (and so maybe not so well informed)?
Based upon the info you've given, personally I'd consider
(a) how valuable security was to me
(b) given that in my current job there were slack periods, see if there was any means by which I could use that slack time to get to grips with some other/new technologies; maybe create something new which you can see the company has a need for.
(c) what skills and knowledge my work colleague has that I could learn from them
(d) asking for an upgrade in job title to something more suitable and reflecting your experience and length of service
(e) if it's possible to lever some, say quarterly, targets and bonuses into your appraisal scheme (do you have one?)
If I could satisfy some of these things then I'd be inclined to stay put in the current climate - even if things go t*ts up I've got an employment history here, rather than zip-all at a new company. Bide my time, work on making myelf as attractive to the markplace as possible (hence (b) & (c) above) and move when it's really worth my while - i.e. > £500 per month more better off and for something which really ticks all the boxes well.

I've been in IT nearly 15 years and have spent probably 75% of this with not enough to do, so it may well be something you'll find will continue in your current job or any other new job you might find.I'd take it, especially for around a quarter more a month...
Do what feels right and don't regret your decision later on. Only you know what you want to do and where you will be the happiest.
Out of the two, I bet your leaning towards one of the options - if so, why? Whats the deeper reasons for the decision? Is it worth punting your career on it?
For me personally IT is all about moving forward and constantly learning new stuff, when it gets boring (after a while) it's time to move on. Onwards and upwards so they say.

This.....
Otherwise, what are you planning to progress? Either within your existing company or moving to another?
It all depends if you want one day reach the dizzy heights of have multiple company directorships, remap your 335d etc etc
In short - go, go now!
I'm in the same field but more focussed towards database development. I would say that £25k salary with a confirmed 5% rise is very good in the current climate. In this field working within a big company is always better for your CV and career progression (IMHO). Personally for £500 I wouldn't budge

after having been burned by a company i moved to i would advise you to tread very carefully.
find out everything financially about the company, see if they have any debts or big profit losses over the last few years.
I moved from a secure low salary IT job to a market rate salary job and really got screwed. Lied to at interview, mislead about what the job entiled and ultimately sacked when they closed down their london office and relocated the staff who did the same job as i was doing.
In my case it seemed to be their intention all along, just be careful your not falling into a similar trap as it sounds odd to only have 1 member of staff responsible for all systems.

I have done some research on this company and financially their roughly figures are;
Cash at Bank : £2,700,000
Net Worth : £1,770,000
Total Current Liabilities : £3,100,00
Total Current Assets : £4,500,00
Is this sound okay?
There are about 150 people in Uk office and few in other 3 countries. Uk is their head office and people have been working for them for a long period of time 8+ years.
