Hi finance guys.

My partner is having some problems with her credit and could do with some advice on defaults.

Basically, my partner has seemingly had a poor credit report for years. We had no idea why really but fortunately she hasn't needed to borrow money until now.

We just recently applied for our first mortgage. Everything was going through great, the advisers were 100% confident that it would be successful but unfortunately it came back declined due to my partners poor credit history. They pressed us for any CCJs or anything like that but she has none. They advised her to get an Experian report to find out why.

She got a report today to find a default on her history from 2008 for £69 from LaRedoute. Now she used to buy things from their catalogue but closed her account in 2008 as she never really used it and they used to send her all sorts of crap. She paid her remaining balance and they closed the account. As far as she was concerned, that was the end of it.

So, this default comes as a bit of a surprise as they never tried to chase her up for any outstanding balance. The last email they sent her was in July 2009 with some offer on 15% off. They never sent any letters or anything to the address, which we lived at until December 2009.

She called LaRedoute tonight to try and found out what the debt was and if they would remove the default if she paid the £69 she is apparently in debt with them. The person on the phone said that they couldn't access information that old and that they couldn't remove a default. My partner told them that she knew perfectly well they could remove it and that she wouldn't pay the outstanding debt if they wern't going to remove it. It will be removed automatically in 2 years anyway.

The person on the phone insisted that they would have made every effort to chase up the debt, even though my partner has all her emails (gmail account) going back to 2006 and there is not one requestion money from LaRedoute.

Eventually the person on the phone said she would refer it to their debt collection department to see if they would be willing to remove the default.

My partner is willing to pay the debt given that A) they can tell us what it was for and that B) they remove the default. If they can't tell us what the debt was for, why should we take their word for it that it is owed and not a mistake? As far as she was concerned the account was paid up and closed and it seems strange that they never chased her for any debt owed.

Does anyone have any advice on getting a default removed? We have researched and know that they are the people who made the default and can also remove it. Obviously, the call centre person may not be aware that they can remove them, but telling us they can't is a blatant lie.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

One default will make very little difference to a mortgage application if any, i have 2 on my record and managed to get a mortgage no problem on my own. Lenders make their own scores up as to whether they will lend the money and only use a credit report as guide only. They also cant see the what the defaults are just a mark that a payment was late

Umm, I think that there's a SIGNIFICANT difference between i) a late payment and ii) a debt having to be written off by a creditor.

It will make a difference and it IS worth sorting out.
(I used to work designing credit scrore cards for one of the big 4 UK retail banks.)

Yes the debt has been written off, not a late payment. She has never missed a payment and this is the only bad point on her whole credit record.

We aren't even convinced the debt exists and LaRedoute aren't being much help as they wont give out a number or put us through to their debt depertment and they say they wont call us until after the new year sometime. Plus the fact they can't even tell us what the debt was for doesn't help much...

Is there anything we can do to get them to get the ball rolling on removing it? Anyone legal we could talk to etc? We were set on this house with everything going through and this has pretty much made us ineligible for a mortgage.

Have you spoken to the credit reference agency themselves? They usually help out with this kind of thing.
