Hello people.
Just trying to fit the torque converter back on my tomcat gearbox.I can slide it onto the shaft up until the transmission oil pump dogs but no matter how i try, cant get the dogs to locate in the back of the torque converter. Is it a matter of try try try again, or is there any insider tricks to be used.
Thanks.
Andy.

Shouldn't be that difficult. I assume you have eyballed the location of the dogs and are ensuring that the back of the t/c is in line with them before sliding it on.

Yes, I put marks on the torque converter and on the bell housing both sides to help.

J JJ JJ Jiggle it Granville !!!

seriously, you may have to locate it on the first splines, then twist it slightly to align the secondary splines.
They should all be aligned if you have not disturbed it since you took it off.

If you keep jiggling it will eventually go in. Last time I had to refit mine the box was on the floor under the car - TC slipped forward whilst I was taking the box off to do the rear crank seal.
Took some time & the cats learnt some interesting new wordscurse

Note that if you lay the TC on its side it holds a LOT of fluid, so unless its a new one be prepared.

It's easier if you can stand the gearbox on end. Use wire from one side of the box to the other to stop it slipping off again during fitting!

Link here to Ashcrofts giving the required measurement from a straightedge laid across the bell housing down to the top of any of the 4 lugs on the front of the torque converter to ensure correct positioning. (On mine - 1986 RRC 3.5EFi - its 50mm) If you don't get it right, it IS possible to fit & bolt up the box, but it will split the box fluid pump & you will have no drive.
