What do you do when you're skidding!
Discussion
As per title, I'm sure most drivers have had the dreaded/fun moment when the vehicle has lost all control and is sliding (esp in winter) - what do you do in that matrix moment?
1. brake harder
2. pull the handbrake up
3. hope for the best
4. dab the accelerator
5. listen to some music
6. start praying
7. mess about with the steering wheel
It would be good if the mods could turn this into a poll aswell as I don't know how to!

4 & 7 (If in doubt power out + a dab of oppo
). If this goes tits up then 1 & 3, maybe even 2 (just to give the hands something to do!), to slow down the inevitable collision. Followed by 5 either way in order to chill out and 6 if the resulting injuries are serious enough to warrant it.
All of them?

How many cars can still skid?
All of them?I don't believe the OP means skidding as it should be defined, locking the wheels - think he means general sidewaysness for whatever reason.
It's pretty simple in theory, though the application is rather harder and takes a lot of experience and instinct to get right.
Remove the input that caused the slide - if you were accelerating hard, back off, if you caused it by lifting off then get back on - and balance the car so it doesn't have acceleration or deceleration. Then you can deal with the attitude by opposite lock. You do need to be VERY ready to wind the opposite lock off when the car finds grip, though, because overcorrection is the most common error.
Knowing how much, when and for how long to apply the lock is the hard part!

If it's the back end boot it and point the wheels into the slide (FWD car), as hopefully it'll grip at some point.
Understeer is rare but generally let off the power steadily and feel for what grip is available using the wheel and possibly apply brakes slightly to push the weight forwards a bit.
If it's all four wheels then smile, laugh and hope it all goes well.
