On Friday i was out on a works night out and left my (newly passed test) missus in charge of the car (Mk 1.5 Focus). I was a little worried as when i left on the train it starting snowing quite heavily and she was at work.

Got back home on Sat AM and met her in town, and walked to the car. I drove as the roads were still quite icy/slushy/st.7

Immediately i sense something wrong, there is a wobble on the wheel, and when braking (from low speeds), there is a distinct knocking noise. I ask her if anything happened, being very nice and treading very carefully as not only was she miffed that partners were not invited to the works party, but also any criticism towards her driving sends her loopy.

Anyway, i nurse the car home for a few miles and inspect the wheels after she admits she bumped into the kerb parking at home. The nearside front wheel has been kerbed really badly, not just marked but appears as though it is misshapen and almost cutting into the tyre.

Going to my local garage tomorrow AM to get it checked out. Do you think the buckled alloy will cuse the knocking on the brakes?

My friend in his clio did this today. Got caught out by ice, hit a kerb and now theres a weird noise coming from that corner.

Will let you know what it was when he gets it sorted.

Well..
Your friend slid into a kerb, with maybe a 5-10mph-ish impact.

In this case, it was only scratch when parking on the drive. The knackered wheel bearings, twisted suspension components and square wheels are just a coincidence.

Maybe she didn't mention how fast she was driving at the time?

But normally if you kurb a car whilst parking you wont destroy the car-what would you do if you hit a speed bump!

If this "light kerb scrape" has caused so many symptoms of a greater problem, it's probable that this "little scrape" was more of a bump, probably sliding into the kerb at an angle. Bent suspension arm perhaps?

Expect to be replacing the lower arm, wheel and tyre as a minimum. It may also have distorted the hub, knackered the wheel bearing, bent the arb link and bar and the track rod and the track rod end might be knackered too !

Eta I've seen snapped lower arms from hitting curbs at speed, it is worth jacking the car up and wiggling the wheel to see how much play there is. If it is excessive I would not drive it.

Hi

Bmw e61 touring 535d, clipped the kerb the other night BANG !! Egg in front tyre, rip in side wall of rear tyre, both replaced and full four wheel alignment and nothing out of kilter. I would therefore suggest the issue was nearly there before she hit the kerb OR your good lady REALLY hit the kerb !

If what she's not saying is hitting a glancing blow off a high dual carriageway kerb at 40-50mph then factor in about £2k of damage. I know... I've done it. Lots to break down there...banghead

I don't really see the issue here. just put on the spare tyre and see how it goes.

obviously you're going to have to get that wheel replaced, so get on ebay and look for a replacement. And whilst you are waiting for that just see how it drives with the spare wheel on.

clonky=bad and something further is damaged i.e. suspension arm etc.
ok=no worries, just get another wheel on there.

big deal sorted.

Well i need a new wheel (got a temporary steel sorted for £24), some ARB links, and a new tyre (possibly).

Getting it sorted in the morning for approx £80.

Nice of her to keep quiet about it until you noticed.

so is it all sorted then. drive perfectly normally?

also do get it aligned properly, or else you'll chew through this new tyre in no time

CMJ... I'd expect that a BMW E61 suspension is quite possibly a bit tougher than that found on a 1.5K Focus. The extra cost of the bmw does go into some engineering as well as the 'free' coffee and crumpets on the dealers....

Could a car be damaged but not clunky. In my first recent non fault accident my front right wheel was hit and the tracking was miles out. The garage did a alignment and said job done. I thought there would be a lot more to it, but the mechanic assured me there was not!

I'm still nervous about driving at speed, just incase paperbag
