Diagnose my smoking problem
Discussion
My turbo blew up, snapped the shaft, seals went awol and I ended up with most of the oil in the intercooler and only a litre in the engine. The car was run for a very short time in order to get of a dark and wet motorway. Its an old school VW with a 1.9 TDi AFN engine code.
I have replaced the turbo but the car now had developed a smoking habit. If I pootle fine, no smoke. Floor it for 30 seconds and lots of blue smoke that continues for about a minute after you are pootling again.
I am thinking its the valve stem seals, would this sound correct. The smoke is blue!

Worn valve stems normally manifest themselves at first start up when the car has been sat, oil leaks past them when the car is stood and is then burnt off when you start it up again.
They could be the cause but not likely.
As someone else has said, clean out the intercooler and pipework if you haven't done so.
Could be worth getting the compression checked for ring damage too.
Was the turbo new, re-con or 2nd hand? Turbo seals could be shot if the latter.

Of course you have taken the intercooler out and washed it out with paraffin/heating oil/petrol after the turbo failed.
So seeing that you have done that then i would be tempted to say either the seals in the turbo or valve stem seals
Yes all cleaned, the turbo is second hand but a good one. Thanks for all your help, I will tax it and see if it gets better with use if I keep the revs to normal diesel driving its ok and should be OK until the mot.So seeing that you have done that then i would be tempted to say either the seals in the turbo or valve stem seals
disconnect the air feed near the inlet manifold and try revving it. if it still smokes this rules out oil/crap in the induction system and also the cold side of the turbo oil leak.
last time i had a problem like this turned out the oil scraper rings were not working correctly (stuck)
is it using any oil? i.e. the smoke could be diesel if it isn't using oil
