With 4 weeks till I travelled & a passport to renew, I thought I'd use the Post Office check & send service....PO & IPS Websites & info given suggest 2 weeks turnaround: So after 2 weeks you can ring & check its progress if its not arrived.

Applied & done at the PO on the 8th, not received by the Passport office till the 12th!! & as of today the 19th they've not even looked at it yet! So I now have to pay the upgrade fee for 24hr turnaround to get it in time.

So thats the £80 for the post office for doing feck all not in a hurry & now another £56 to pay for the 48hr service.

Think yourself lucky.

We have to apply for British passports from the embassy in Paris. It's a fookin' black hole there!
Once sent you have no way of telling how long it will take, and, although they charge about €40 to deliver your passport to your house by courier, they rarely do, instead sending it to the British Embassy in Luxembourg for us to collect - even though we paid for courier delivery!

Oh, and the passport itself costs about £120 PLUS the delivery that doesn't happen! The s.

I was told that you are paying a premium for the biddies at the post orifice to check the form tp ensure its filled in correctly- nothing more.
Add to that not trusting royal mail with important documents or paperwork, so Ive always done the same day renewal which takes a few hrs max.
Even my second passport (which you cant get using same day service) was on the doormat within 48hrs of the interview so once its in the system its a qiick process, its just getting into that system that is slow

OP, I feel sure that your single incident is completely representative of every application via this service. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Check and send is just that!

PO check the form and send it.

Its not the PO's fault that you left it until 4 weeks before travelling to renew your passport!

My kids new passports took 4 weeks with check and send last year. The PO estimated 4 weeks when they did the Check & send.

About a year ago I was in a queue at the PO and the guy at the front was going mental. His Passport app had been returned as there were errors on the form, he was complaining to the PO that he had paid for check and send, and they hadn’t checked properly. The woman just said ‘check and send doesn’t guarantee that we will check adequately’, he asked for his check and send money back but was refused, and then when he submitted the corrected form she asked if he would like to use check and send? He was seriously pi**ed off.

Just a reminder :- a passport can be renewed anytime from 6 months before expiry and the unexpired time gets added to the new passport. You can avoid the last minute panic. Sorry as this is no help to you for another 10 years but spread the word and let others avoid the panic.

It's now up to 9 months before expiry, as i'm currently looking to renew mine while there are no imminent trips

Fill in the form online.

They then send the filled in forms to you a few days later, you sign the forms and attach a couple of photo's and put back in the post.

My passport was with me 4 days later (this was in November). I was very impressed with the service.

Part of the price though is to send it "guaranteed" by 13.00 next day.

Try dealing with the Indian high commission . They lost my mums passport renewal and then denied ever having it.
It took a year to finally get her passport back.
