So, I want to connect several devices to my TV via HDMI, i.e. Sky Box (newer 1tb type), PS3, DVD etc.
If I then connect the optical S/PDIF TV audio out to my 5.1 amp, will I get full 5.1 surround sound (Dolby Digital AC-3) from all the connected devices?

No. You need to connect everything to your amp then one lead from the amp to the TV. The TV will only repeat 2 channel audio from its optical. There are other issues too like the sky box outputs 2 channel audio from the HDMI and 5.1 from the optical so you need to configure your amp to deal with this then the Ps3 will output 5.1 from the HDMI so again the amp needs to be configured for that too.

My Panasonic G20 repeats 5.1 from it's optical output! I have the PS3 and a Panasonic Bluray player connected via HDMI to the TV and then the TV via it's optical out to the AMP (only have one optical in on the amp). The amp picks up dolby digital when being played by either device through TV. This of course may not work on all TVs.

Both my LG LCD's throw out digital signals from the spidf. From DIVX, to the Xbox/PS3, if the signal is digital, the amp lights up just fine.

Now that does surprise me as the G20 is one of the ones I have tried in the past, i wonder if they are running a different software to when they were first released. Even the user manual clearly states;

User Manual said:
When audio from other equipment connected to this unit via HDMI is output using “DIGITAL AUDIO OUT” of this unit the system switches to 2CH audio.
Are you sure your getting DD5.1 and not just Pro LogicII?

Itis the norm for a TV to output 2 channel PCM from the optical when the audio has been recieved via HDMI as they generally dont have the gubbins to do the conversion its far easier to downmix it to 2 channel, but when the source is its own HD tuner or memory stick then 5.1 is likely.

You are correct. I had forgotten I had set the pS3 up with it's own optical out so was getting that. Checked the TV last night and it doesn't pass though 5.1. Stupid machine.

Are my TV's also not sending out the proper signals do you think headcase? I was simply basing it on the fact that the Xbox and PS3 kick in the dolby digital display on the amps. They sound just the same as wiring them straight to the amp to me.I also get higher quality DIVX films doing the same.Non digital surround sources just leave the amps displaying my own setting of Pro Logic II etc etc.

If your amp reports on its front display something like DD5.1 or 3+2 then you will indeed be getting 5.1. Any chance you can double check your setup and make sure you are HDMI to the TV then optical to the Amp as if there is indeed a TV out there that does pass 5.1 from HDMI to optical then its well worth knowing wink

Well, the PC is HDMI from the GPU to the TV and then toslink cable from the TV to the amp.If I play films on the PC with a DTS soundtrack etc, the amp switches to Dolby Digital on the display and does sound great to me.

The PCM light can also come on along with the PLII indicator for non DTS sources and when a digital source is played, the speaker icons on the amp change from simply L/R to L/R/C/RR/RL and sub.

If I run PS3/Xbox via HDMI to the TV, it switches to digital on the amp in the same way it does if I connect them straight from the console to the amp.It does the same on my 32" LG LCD and Yamaha amp and the same on my bigger 42" LG LCD and other Yamaha amp.It will also do the same with a blu-ray/dvd player.

I just thought though, are we all assuming toslink/Spidf is the same type of cable?

Bimey, the above sounded a bit confusing! Basically..

PC using HDMI to TV and then TV toslink cable to amp = 5.1 speaker symbols to be displayed and the words DOLBY DIGITAL and a digital icon to be displayed on the amp (it can depend on which software player you are using and or the settings for this though)

PS3/Xbox/Blu-ray player to the TV via HDMI and toslink from TV to amp = the same as the above.

I understood it biggrin It does sound like LG's do actually do it! A Big thumbs up for that!
Toslink= Optical (little red light cable wink ) SPDIF= Single phono connection. I am led to believe SPDIF and Toslink are exactly the same signal but transmitted through a different medium.

S/PDIF (Sony Philips Digital Interface) is the format, or transmission signal standard.
This signal is carried over either TosLink (Toshiba Link) [which is the optical], or coaxial cable.

Converters are cheap and easily available. About £10.
