Before I enter the world of correspondence with the DVLA, what can I realistically expect. I would like to trace a range of cars I owned and a brace of rather nice plates I let go in haste during the 80's, would you hold out any hope?.

Thanks for any advice offered.

Nope none - legally you'd need to set yourself up as a private clamoing company and pay the charge to get DVLA to provide you with the info you want - I'm not going down the illegal side

You could try a letter to DVLA but my guess is they won't help.

However some basic options are open to you to at least see if a letter (or setting up as a clamping firm) is worthwhile

First you can establish if the plate is still linked to the original car and if it's still on the road (or how long since it's been on the road)

https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/

Vehicle enquiry - you need make and a reg number that's all

I'll use a car I mentioned in a thread earlier (belonged to my dad when I was growing up)

Hillman Hunter (Dark blue and need a new engine in under a week)

The vehicle details for PPP 172M are:

Date of Liability 01 08 1985
Date of First Registration 08 03 1974
Year of Manufacture Not Available
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1500cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour BLUE
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available

So with a date of liability of 1985 (last time it was taxed) it doesn't look good that this one isn't now a washing machine.

Of course it could be stored by an enthusiast but how many people have cars stored since the mid 80's (See note) lets be realistic it more than likely to have been fragged

Note one of mine

The vehicle details for HHU ***K are:

Date of Liability 01 04 1984
Date of First Registration 01 07 1972
Year of Manufacture Not Available
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2490cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour GOLD
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available

Oh well I'll get to eventually!!!

Anyway - If plate and car are no longer linked it's unlikely the you will recover the plate cos someone else will have it for the same reason

http://www.rac.co.uk/products-services/car-data-ch...

Slap in the reg and press go and you get a little info before you get to the payment stage which will tell you what car the reg is fixed to now (or last ish)

I use this one as an example

Vehicle Details for registration number HHC5

Make PEUGEOT
Year of manufacture 2004
Model 206 SW S
Engine size(CC) 1360
