Would you buy it for £3500 where there are no receipts and the ESP function is not working but a FVSH with cambelt changed. Just need to get to station and back (20 miles).

Probably couldn't say if I would or not without seeing it. What does it drive like, and why doesn't it have any receipts, is it hpi clear, la la la la

i'd probably just get a nice condition MK4 golf tdi, very good motors imo. Boring but good.

HPI clear and taken as PX, it is trade so maybe some comeback but puzzled as to why he doesn't ge it sorted and sell for more? He said it was because of other nicks and scratches and a cracked wing mirror holder.

In a car like that, how likely are you to turn the ESP off anyway (I assume you mean it's stuck on, not stuck off?).

The diesel engines on them are practically bullet-proof too, unless it's the 150 engine, in which case the turbos can be iffy apparently. I have a 130 Bora which is the same engine (I believe) and it has just tipped 160k with little more than anti-roll bar bushes going on it.

If it's what you want, go for it!

I would buy a snotter but wife has to use it so often and have 4K to spend so trying to get everything we need:
Preferences are: auto, Diesel, tidy premium brand, estate or hatchback, strong safety rating (2 kids) and the icing would be AWD (we live in frosty snowy kent.

If its a MK6 (i.e. the 2009 onwards model) I would definitely buy it, complete bargain at that price. Early basic petrols are CAPing at £7k+ and for a diesel your looking closer to £10k. In fact if you don't please forward me details and I'll go and pick it up next week!

If however its the old MK5 then its not such a good deal...

This. Bargain for a car of that age despite the milage.

Don't send money before the car turns up as if its too good to be true it probably isn't true

Sounds like a Mk5 given the ESP light is on (do a search for ABS Pump) Also check that the stamps are genuine. Lots of people stamp the books so phone the dealer on the stamp (get the number from the internets) and check history with them.

If it all checks out. Doesn't sound too bad actually

if its a mk6 yes, but probably not as that is the price you'd pay for a 2004 tdi mk5 not a 2009 mk6 tdi.

ESP light is a £500 fix but you may as well ignore it makes no difference.

Thats a good point.
Someone should set up a mobile VW Grup FSi ABS block replacement service - there must be 1,000's of VW, Seat and Skoda's out there with ESP' lights still on!

Which light is illuminated on the dash?

I certainly know that an illuminated EPC light on TSI models means you probably should run away quickly.

It's a bargain price - but I'd want to read the ECU with VAGCOM before parting with cash, just to give you some pointers as to what is actually wrong.

A Mk6 for £3.5K sounds like a bargain even if there is a £500ish issue to sort......what year is the car ?
