Audi A4 Avant

Looking at buying one of these and wondered what goes wrong.

Its 2000, 1.8 petrol with SH up to 90k. Its done 125k. Got a fair few scratches.

What should i look out for on these?

Make sure you drive it first, I had one and it was very very slow

Not a lot.....

My Avant 1.9tdi has just passed 280 thousand miles.... and just needed its first clutch change.

Gave up servicing it at Audi after 120,000. Since then its had a cam belt change and yearly oil service.

Still a smooth, reliable motor.

Coil packs i think. I assume it's the non-turbo 125bhp 20v version? The engine doesn't really deliver enough oomph and yet you'll be seeing 1.8T-like economy or ironically worse. What price is the car? (also assuming) under £1k i hope!

As above, the normally aspirated 1.8 20v is pretty ste.

The 1.8T would be better, even more so with annual/10k oil changes.

Seconded.

I drove my dad's old auto Passat quite a bit that had the 1.8 engine and in auto it was pretty gutless and not very economical.

1.9TDI 110bhp A4 Avants are pretty cheap these days as long as you don't mind something thats done 150k plus.

We've got one. 1.8 non turbo. Bought 8 years ago with 50k on it. It.s been the family run about ever since . Now on 118k and I know I shouldn't admit this but it's had one service in 8 years... It's got dents in all panels, nail varnish and all sorts of rubbish from having two 6 year old daughters. Its slow although quite economical and has recently just cost us 100 notes to get a years mot on it.

However for a family car it's been great. A few electrical niggles in the years but I,ve justleft them and will run it until it blows..

Central locking doesn't work, speakers Not the best

If I,d ever sell it I,d be too embarrassed too so will drive it until it goes no more.

My 90 year old semi blind grand parents think it's a smart car....

I owned one for a couple of years. It never gave me any trouble.

The best ever mpg I saw was 35 on a run through France.

Good points:
-Good seating position
-Great ride quality on 15" wheels (mine was the base model, not SE)
-Slick gear change
-Not too much body roll

Bad points:
--Terrible rear legroom for an estate/hatchback
--Not a driver's car in the slightest
--Engine a bit uninspiring
--A metallic 'farty' sounding exhaust note, which wasn't to my taste

I wouldn't say it is underpowered, but it certainly wasn't quick. IIRC it was 125bhp and 1250kg so not really a heavyweight like current A4s.
