Phone lines and Sky

Had sky for a number of years now, and I recall I had to connect the box to a phone socket for the first yeatr.
I havn't moved it since, but I also had my modem in the same plug via a filter, for some reason my lappy was slow slow slow downstairs, and my son couldnt connect via his I-phone, although the PC upstaris worked fine.
Anyway I moved the modem to the initial phone socket in the house, ie the first one in the door, and it seems to have speeded up the wi-fi connection.
When I plug the sky box back in to the phone socket without a filter, althought the modem is plugged to another socket, it knocks out wi-fi, so the question really is do I need my box plugged into the phone line, and what does it do?

From one year after Sky was installed, you are under no obligation to have the box connected to the phone line. If you disconnect it, you won't be able to use box office or most interactive services. If you plug anything into a phone socket - phone, Sky etc - then you need to use a microfilter on every socket where something is plugged in.
The internal wiring in your house may be responsible for the problem - but fit microfilters first.

Lots of people have complained recently that the Sky telephone connection affects things like the phone line quality and broadband speed.
Unless you really need and want Sky Box Office then I would unplug it if I were you. You will get a warning box on the TV every time you reboot the Sky box but simply ignore this.
I have had mine unplugged for many years now with no worries.

Interesting that your wifi speed is better since moving your modem. Do you have the standard Sky one they supply? i think its either netgear or belkin??
My wifi with sky is weird in that it can run 3 xbox's no problem, but is so so slow streaming videos from youtube, even 1 minute clips. Iplayer seems to work ok sometimes (just) and other sites (cough) are just as slow streaming most times. Wonder if moving the router might work for me too?
Though i live in a 3 storey house and the main phone line is on the bottom, so distance may make it worse rather than better (its currently plugged into the first floor phone line).
