Apart from the Ford RS2000 using any other engine but the pinto it was stuck with are there any other 70's saloons that can beat modern cars?
Frankly I am amazed by the Triumph using the engine that it was born with!

Dolomite wins again STC championship.

Jochum Bunkus (Hamburg) wins for the 2' time the overall STC championship in his Dolomite over Porsche's GT40 even a Viper in that very competitive field.
The battle went on till the very last of 2 races on the Nurburg ring.
His clas rival a Honda S2000 280hp did just win the first race, lap 10 you can see the Sprint passing the S2000.
In the very last race (same weekend) Jochum manage to beat the S2000, he needed that win not only to take the 2 liter but also the overall championship.

There are only 2 laps inboard at the Hockenheim ring to give a good impression of the speed and roadholding of this Dolomite, excellent driver too.

Wasn't just a "Sprint" event then? wink

The sequential gearbox is not original IIRC. How original is the rest?

It's still running a Sprint engine, at the very least.

But the Viper leaves the S2000 for dead in the youtube vid (around 15 mins) ? (Which is hardly surprising).

That Dolly is mental and must be north of 300bhp. A sprint was my first car and my first mod was to change the 1 3/4 su carbs for some 2 inchers off a Jag. It made a quick car alot quicker wink

Seems to be running quite warm, what with the headers glowing red; what's the headgasket life like? Good on him though; British Leyland bathplug swirl of quality FTW!

Also beats the BMW in this month's Total BMW magazine (as it did in a similar 2002 vs Sprint US mag test a few years ago).

Still miss mine on odd days and considering getting another again next year when I've got more time on my hands.

My dad got a Dolomite just after I passed my test, always think of it as the car I learnt to drive in.

Looks totally factory standard, that........ doesn't look like it suffers from 'wheel tuck'.

I think the Dolly Sprint had a solid 'live' rear axle - plenty of tramp but no tuck.

Yep, tramp and oversteer in spades, but no tuck...

Love it smile

Dolly sprint was the thing to beat in the 70's production saloon championships, shame the road cars all suffered from head gasket and overheating issues.

I always wanted one due to one of my dads friend used to race one.
That yellow stripe on the badge on the rear C pillar 'Sprint' meant so much to me as a kid, and I remember when I got offered the chance to buy one in 1988 that had been fitted with a Fiat 2.0 twin cam engine but the test drive was such a let down due to the way it drove - it felt a bit like a fast Marina!

Thing I liked about my friend's Dolly Sprint was the overdrive on 3rd/4th.
Little flick switch gave you an extra gear when we all had 4-speeders in our Escorts.
It was a pretty quick old thing for a 4-door saloon back then smile
