Before going any further just want to point out that I am a fan of the 911 and this is in no way a troll post.

I work in Chelsea and regularly see a large number of 997's on the road pootling along at normal speeds, and have recently realised just how bad they sound.

The metallic rattley noise like a loose exhaust or heatshield vibration seems to be the overiding sound made and to my ears they are nowhere near as sonorous as the straight 6 that BMW uses.

Whilst I'm aware they improve with revs, why do they sound so awful at low speed and does anyone actually like it?

The standard exhaust makes the car sound very benign. You really need to have the Sports Exhaust option or have an aftermarket exhaust fitted for aurul enjoyment.

Also remember it is an F6 engine and can never sound as good as a V8 or V12.

The more modern ones don't sound too bad but there is one by me that sounds horrid, it must be one of the last air cooled ones and sounds a cross between an Subaru and a Beetle.

kind of like a e46 m3, sounds like a bag of spanners at low revs under load.

i also think the porkers lost something going water cooled

however i think most pilots are too busy hanging on to worry about the sound coming out of the back smile

911's sound truly dreadful.

I had a suzuki swift when i was 17 that sounded better than the 4s i testdrove. One of the many reasons i didnt leave a deposit.

997 with sports exhaust from middle rev range to redline sounds good to me. Bit quiet below that, but on full chat it's glorious.

The water cooled 911s generally sound a lot better from inside the car than outside.

Although GT3s and PSE equipped cars sound great inside and out.

I will admit they sound a bit rubbish at idle, especially on a cold start up, but the wail above 5000rpm to the redline is to die for.....cloud9

They've got to pass drive-by noise regulations, so at low speeds they will sound a bit dull.
