Tonight on my nightly jolly to work, i approached a vehicle in front that didnt seem to be driven to an acceptable standard. I followed this vehicle for about 3 miles and on several occasions observed a few near misses of the kerb and frequent violation of the white lines!
He was doing approx 40 mph in a 60 zone (although you could be forgiven for thinking it was 50) nowt wrong with that but he just didnt seem in proper control and i was concerned.

Now what would have happened if i phoned 999 (handsfree of course) and voiced my concernes of said vehicle? giving all info on car and location etc what would the do?

I'll leave the BiB to answer the specific question, but will comment that - as we all know - a scamera will do nothing!

Your call would have gone to a Control Room and details taken. If lucky there may well have been an untasked resource that could be allocated to your valuable information, but may be would have had to travel some considerable distance to attend. All not lost however, as from your details of VRM follow up enquiry and maybe a D i/c result. Later a request from BiB for you to be involved and be the star of the show, which you would be for reporting such matters and thereby maybe saving a life in the removal of a bad driver off the road (for a year), in the provision of a witness statement etc.

OK..... so you really want to know what about using the dog n'bone on the move. In your case nowt as you already provide the answer in that if there is no BiB about to deal with the Drunk how can they deal with you. (Enter Streaky with fire and brimstones).

Serious, for emergency purposes it is OK and I would rate this one as that.

I did this earlier this week

Followed an obviously seriously impaired driver for about 6 miles, made a note of the reg no etc. He then pulled into a pub car park, what a surprise.

Crimestoppers is a useful number for your mobile, sod the handsfree if you get stopped hand the phone to the copper, then get them to deal with a real hazard.

It's not that uncommon for people to phone in with stuff like this.

I have to say, if you used your mobile, handsfree or otherwise, to report a drunk driver, you certainly wouldn't be getting a ticket from me. You'd get a bloody big "Thank you".

(Assuming of course, you hadn't been so distracted by your use of the phone that your speed had crept up and you'd mown a child or three down...)

That last bit was, of course, a joke. The top bits weren't.

Paolow, Crimestoppers used to give £500 but as it's not 24 hours I'd guess they want you to report people who you know regularly do it.

I've reported several drunk drivers, I'm not sure whether I just notice them or come across a lot of them.

On a couple of occations the police have arrived and delt with the situation. Most memorable one was when a drunk driver rammed me, we exchanged details and then I rang the police. The control room asked me to follow him until they could get a unit out. The guy pulled into a side street and swapped with his passenger, so when pulled wasn't driving. My first thought was if she is legal to drive and sober why was he driving as he was steaming drunk and they had an 8 year old girl in the car.

Anyway the police grilled him and he got aggressive a skuffle broke out he was arrested and charged. 18 months 500 fine for DD and driving without due care.

Another one was an old feller followed him and the Control room didn't seem to care. Now this guy kept stopping when traffic approached him as though he thought it was going to hit him. I eventually followed him to a church which was opposite a Police station, I was still on the phone to the control room and told them the location. After waiting outside for 30 minutes no one had arrived - pretty poor really and the Police station was open.

The question wasnt a case of me on the phone driving more like what would the BiB do to follow up on the enquiry?
The person needs to be caught in the act, as knocking on someones door after they have commited the crime and not in there vehicle surely the BiB cant do anything? any incident reported like this would surely have to be acted upon instantly to get the guilty party caught red-handed.

Ideal situation: Catch driver driving while pissed.

Option two: Get a good description of the driver from informant, go to car owner's address, follow usual procedure for getting screening breath test (and all the nightmare with reference to trespass/power of entry etc).

Option C: Put the details on ANPR/intelligence system, and wait to get them next time. Drink drivers don't tend to be one offs[/sweeping_generalisation_mode]
