I used to live across the road from a school in the West Midlands around 1994, one Sunday I heard an almighty bang, a Mondeo went into a classroom, the driver, old man in his 70's had a cardiac at the wheel. What can you do? and what can you do about pensioners getting confused about pedal order? and whats the difference between the above and a young driver falling asleep at the wheel? and, and that's it no more questions...............

Saw one of those police programs on TV and they had an acronym for the "old codger pressing wrong pedal" syndrome as it happens so frequently.

From the comments;

"Oh dear, another one of these cases, the fact is that this is a very easy mistake to make, and it's a design flaw in all automatic cars. The brake pedal is twice as wide as a manual version, and sits at a higher level than the throttle pedal, so people get used to pressing the brake on the right hand edge but if you your foot slips off the brake you are guaranteed to land on the throttle pedal, panic sets in and they press harder believing they're still pressing the brake - bang! I don't know why the brake pedal is so large, but a simple redesign of the pedals so the throttle sits higher than the brake would solve this problem, even if you slip off the brake, you won't be pressing the throttle so will have much more time to appreciate what is happening and re-apply the brake. Yeah - I've nearly done this, and I'll betcha many many auto drivers have come close as well, I was lucky but it took a real mental effort to release the pedal as I believed I was pressing the brake too.

Maybe I'm lucky, or some kind of driving god but it's not a problem I ever encountered in any of my automatics...

I'm pretty sure the relative position of the brake and accelerator are the same on both my BMW e36's (one manual the other auto!).

At least the lady seems to be taking the hint and giving up. Not before showing herself up to as much of the population as possible obviously!

She's probably been completely oblivious to the carnage she's caused, though.

This has happened to me on many an occasion, I also frequently press the wash-wipe rather than indicating, the air con when I wanted to open the door and often find myself on the stter trying to push a tasty meal up my arse, silly back to front sod I am.

One of our old neighbours (an elderly retired couple) treated themselves to a brand new car a couple of years back. They decided to change to an automatic to make life easier.
The elderly lady decided to take the car out for the first time.
She selected 'D', took her foot off the brake and then paniced when the car started to move on its own. She then stamps out for the brake pedal and hits the gas!

The car took off bacwards up the drive, went straight over the road and accross the front garden of the opposite house before going straight through a full height living room window and finally came to rest competely inside the living room!! clap

Fortunately, the lady living opposite heard a loud noise whilst sitting on her sofa and looked out just in time to run for her life!! yikes

The elderly driver was stuck in the car, in the living-room until the fire brigade arrived and managed to winch the car back out of the house!!

Time to get a bus pass I possibly??! biggrin

How come the car went backwards if she'd selected 'D'

I recall my Gran, panicking after stalling her car in a hilly car park in Cornwall. I was a eleven year old passenger. We rolled down the hill and fortunately hit a large earth bank, which slowed us considerably, and we came to rest against a block wall. Wall was cracked, Austin Vanden Plan needed a bit more filler.

Gran was shook up, but still drove around the local roads. She was never the best driver in the world though!

It could have been a lot worse without the bank scrubbing off quite a lot of speed.
