Ford 2.0 pinto valve spring question
Discussion
I've got an old Formula Ford 2000 which i'm in the process of rebuilding, now i'm into the engine and the valve springs are in a right old state and of wildly varying lengths so basically I need a new set. The regs state that a standard cam has to be used so if I understand things correctly there's no point putting uprated valve springs in, as it just makes the valve train have to work harder and so my question is does anyone know where i might be able to get a quality set of standard valve springs for a virtually pre-historic ford engine?! Ford, by the way still list them as an available part, but no-one in the UK or Germany has any so they can't tell me when i might get them if i were to order from them..
Thanks in advance!

If you're having to rev the engine significantly higher than the stock red line then you'll need uprated springs anyway if the rules allow it. The stock Pinto ones don't go much past 6000 rpm. However I'm sure AE Autoparts still do stock springs for that application and any of the cam manufacturers will do uprated ones.
Ok thanks - the regs are free on valve springs so its not a problem to fit uprated ones. I've never actually driven this car so i don't know what it revs to, but i seem to remember other competitors saying they don't rev them much higher than standard as the power drops off a bit after that..
My thinking was that standard springs would do the job, without unnecessarily loading the valve gear with heavier springs but maybe i'm just being a bit over anal about it! I guess a 'fast road' set would do the job?

I can highly recommend John Toovey Race and Road in Cannock. He built my 2.9L 12 valve V6 cologne race engine and it was absolutely epic and 100% reliable even though it revved to 7500rpm and delivered 260BHP. His normal turn around is 2 to 3 weeks. He looks after and builds many Pinto engines too.

Fair enough! I'm not sure I can wait that long-i want to race it in March! I wonder if you or anyone else can recommend a capable bloke within a sensible distance of High Wycombe to do some lightening work on the flywheel, and the pistons and rods?
Out of interest what weight are you aiming for on the flywheel? I am currently stripping the engine (Pinto) in my kitcar and have weighed the flywheel at very roughly 4.5kg on the bathroom scales but do not if this is ;ightem#ned or not.Gassing Station | Engines & Drivetrain | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
