Ipod Charging 2011 S212

Hoping for a bit of help here please.
I leave an old ipod 30Gb in my glove box connected via the factory lead to my head unit. Nav 50 (not command)?
In my old Audi the Audi Music Inteface kept it constantly charged but in the Merc it only seems to charge when the ignition is on and what is worse, when the ignition is off, the ipod still seems to be on or at least the screen remains active in someway as it loses all its charge overnight. The screen backlight is set at the lowest setting but the screen remains on in the background.
At first i thought the battery may have been shot with constantly being on charge in the Audi so i replaced it but am still having the same issues.
Anyone suffering from the same problem or found a solution?
