main issues with the 6.9 are the air suspension and as with all W116s- rust- make sure the former is working as expensive to fix and check all around for rust, especially sills and arches, these can rust right through. As usual with any old Merc buy on condition and history. The engine is ace 
No useful information,but remember when my dad had one in the 1970's if someone started driving up our backside on the motorway he would tell a 7 year old Marsellus to wave goodbye out of the rear window to the nice man in the car behind us,and then he'd floor it...
Felt like a rocketship in its day but probably no faster than a Passat Tdi nowardays.A great car though.

Had one of these about a year ago. Did a load of work on it - head gaskets, brakes, hydraulics etc.
They're a terrific bit of kit when working ok but bloody expensive to repair. Head gaskets alone were over 500 quid! Very complex for there time as well with self levelling suspension all round, dry sump lubrication etc.
Running costs are high to, fuel consumption is hilarious! Plus they take about 12 litres of oil come service time.
Great to drive though, cruise around in total comfort then put your foot down and the thing squats down and takes off like a 2 ton dragster. Don't handle too bad either.
Rust wise, about the same as any other car from that era, so potentially ruinous.
Buy the best you can find if you buy one.....unless you enjoy fixing complex old Mercs.....or know a good, reasonable, specialist. Pm if need any more info.

The ex Rowan Atkinson 6.9 was for sale near me in Ayrshire not long ago ( last couple of months ) on eBay .
It looked like a sound car in Black with Mushroom leather and was up for around £10K .
There are lots of rough ones around that would probably cost more to put right .
The MBOC Club Chairman has both a 6.3 and a 6.9 ; there was also a back to back road test of the both models in Mercedes-Benz Classic a year or so back .
Lovely cars , although a 560SEL would outperform it .
