SHOE SHOPPING RULES
You're in a shoe shop, second in the queue. On the shelf behind the girl on the till is the most wonderful pair of shoes that you must have.
But there's a problem. The woman in front of you has also seen the shoes and you just know that she is going to buy them.
But you have a stroke of luck. She's rummaging about in her bag for her purse but she can't find it. She may have left it at home. But you realise you don’t have your purse either. And shoe shopping rules state that it would be unforgivably rude to move in front of the lady in front of you without the money to buy the shoes, or without the certain knowledge that the money was on its way to you.
But all is not lost. You have a friend waiting for you at the shop entrance and she has seen your problem. So she throws her purse to you so you can nip around the woman in front and buy the shoes.
And this is where you need to abide strictly by the rules, to avoid any unpleasantness.
Your friend throws the purse to you, you catch it, go ahead of the woman and buy the shoes. That's fine and very polite.
To save time, you can begin to move whilst the purse is in mid air, catch it whilst moving, go in front and buy the shoes. Still within the rules.
The most skilful way, if you and your friend are good enough, is for you to start to move before your friend has actually thrown the purse. At the very second the purse leaves her hand, you are level but not in front of the woman in front of you. As you move in front of her, the purse is in mid air. The woman at the front of the queue thinks you're being rude and breaking the rules by going in front of her with no purse, and appeals to the shop manageress in protest. But the shop manageress can see that you hadn't moved in front until the purse was in flight, as you were level or behind when it was thrown. So by the time you got in front of her, the money was definitely on its way, which is allowable. The purse as is sails over the head of the other woman, and you catch it and buy the shoes. This is completely within the rules of shoe shopping.
Now-----
Shoes = goal
Purse = ball
Girl on till = goalkeeper
Woman at front of queue = defender
You = attacker
Friend at shop entrance = team mate
Shop manageress = linesman / referee
You have now learnt the offside rule.
