Mondeo TDCI 130 MPG
Discussion
Morning all,
I'm just check the MPG (by manual calculation) on my 2005 Mondeo TDCI 130 and I'm only getting aound 38 MPG. I don't drive the car hard and do a mixture of motorway, rural and urban driving.
Any ideas why the MPG is relatively low?
The trip computer says I'm getting 52 MPG!
Thanks.

are you sure you calculated it correctly? i.e brim to brim and your decimal places in the right spot? I know they are not 100% accurate but i wouldnt guess it was that far out!
mine is about spot on, but not done it properly in a while. I dont think i have ever had it that low and can still manage 52 on a 85mph run from sunderland to leeds

I reset the trip last time I filled up and filled it again this morning. I have included the figures below.
400 miles
Fuel cost per litre - £1.37
Total bill = £65
So, 400 miles
Fuel cost per litre - £1.37
Total bill = £65
£65 / £1.37 = 47.44 litres of fuel
47.44 litres / 4.54609 = 10.43 gallons.
400 miles / 10.43 gallons = 38.35 MPG ?

Any ideas why is so low? Are there any sensors that need checking / replacing?
My ST tdci is lucky to get much over 40 indicated with roof racks on, 42-44 without (less at the moment with the winter tyres on). All indicated but I think it's about right.
Got a bit of a heavy right foot but I'm not convinced the Ford diesels are quite as good as I was led to believe.

This is strangely low mpg.
I've had the 130 6 speed and ST tdci, both averaged around 50mpg.
Mixture of 25% urban and 75% motorway at a rough guess.
I'm now averaging 50mpg again, this time with a manual 330d beemer (on receipts against mileage).
Maybe a bit heavy with the loud pedal?
EGR valve could be sticky (but suspect it would hesitate on load).
Have you changed the air filter? More smoke on acceleration could mean blocked filter.
Cheers

Is the temperature gauge reaching the middle of 'normal'? The second (hidden) oil cooler thermostat that very few people know about can prevent the engine warming up properly.
Clean the EGR
Clean the inlet manifold
Carefully clean the inlet ports on the cylinder head
Clean the MAF sensor
Change the oil
Fit a new air filter at least every 10K, not every 3 years.
Give it a good thrashing (3rd gear on the motorway or a flat-out blast across Europe).
