I may need to reset the ECU on an '05 Polo to clear the MIL but I don't have an OBD reader. What's the easiest way to clear the ECU of any fault codes?

I've read somewhere to remove the neg lead then short it across the positive terminal but I'm a little concerned about this method.

Method two seems to be detach the neg lead for three mins, then reconnect leaving the lights on and the ignition in position one for another three mins before removing the keys and reinserting them and startting it.

What's PH got to say?

if its just the engine light turn it of and turn it back it re-sets itself pretty basic on them, if you fix the part eg 02 sensor the light will go off without needing a re-set.
