The mother has a 9 year old 2.0 20v Passat - 130bhp.

Alfa 156 was around 155bhp I think.

Mondeo also around 130bhp. There or there abouts anyway.

Yeah but with a turbo - the OP is asking about naturally aspirated engines.

1999 Renault Clio Sport 172, 2.0 F4R730 engine - 170ish bhp

Actually, isn't the 2000 Honda S2000 240hp? F20C DOHC-VTEC? According to google, honda claimed this as the "top level performance in the world for a 2-litre naturally aspirated engine"

The EP3 2.0 made 200bhp (or 197 or whatever)

It was the first 2.0 CTR. The previous one was the EK9, 182bhp iirc, from a 1600. The B16a in the civic VTI, and maybe the old CRX VTEC made 168bhp, again, iirc, could be wrong.
^^^^ This.

The EP3 2001 onwards was the K20A which made 197BHP. Can't believe thats 10 years old now!

He said 'average', from that I assume 'bulk standard stbox' with no fancy gubbins.....

Toyota (well Yamaha) were putting out 170bhp from a 2.0NA nearly 20 years ago in the MR2 Mk2.

As others have said, the S2000 is over 10 years old now and that's pretty much the most powerful bhp/litre NA engine ever - and they do 100,000 miles no problem.
