Afternoon all,
What is the general concesus on these engines? Are they more robust than the earier M96 / M97 lumps? Anything in particular to watch out for?
I'm thinking about buying an early 2.9 Boxster next year at some point. I really want a 6 speed 'box and the 2.9 comes with this as standard and 252bhp is plenty for a daily driver. I also like the slightly smaller wheels and tyres when compared with the Boxster S - should give a better ride.
All the best.

As far as I am aware, the general consensus is that it is the one to get. It is the new design engine so has no intermediate shaft to fail, the old RMS chestnut is claimed to be resolved and it doesn't have DFI either (which a number of people consider has the potential to be a future issue). It puts out a perfectly adequate amount of power and I have heard very favourable things about its character suiting the car - I'd say go for it.What is the general concesus on these engines? Agree completely - no IMS bearing and no DFi either - although so far that (cokeing) doesn't seem to be an issue with Porsche as it has been with other make(s). And 18" tyres are cheaper and easier to obtain. You can always paint the brake calipers red and take the bootlid badge off...
