Anyone here built their own car from scratch? i.e. not a kit, but designed and built their own chassis and bodywork to make a true one-off?

LaBala
DP1

You'll need to dig back to find the build diary for DP1 but the attention to detail is awesome.

I would love to have the skills to attempt something like that!

Two blokes called Champion and Haynes built a Caterham 7 replica once for £250. Apparently.

You are quite welcome to either love or hate it, but the first Furore F1 was very much a one off, chassis was originally a Formula Ford, but finished up so heavily modified & extended, including new suspension etc. that I don't think Hawke would have recognised it. Powered by 2 Kawasaki ZX10 engines, one driving each rear wheel (no diff) & bodywork was made by myself from sheet aluminium & fibreglass.

I think it's one of the last things that, up until recently, hadn't been tried. Credit for doing it, I bet it's awesome fun to drive too! thumbup

Hi,

My husband as a learning curve took the first steps by designing and building his own bodywork which fitted the Riot chassis (the Wolfe zxr).
He has now completely designed and made his own chassis and new bodywork for our 2nd car which will be on track at the end of March(Wolfe tg02).

Any chance of some pics of the build and final results?

It sounds seriously interesting!

I built this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UKvu-ukiR0&lis...
The body is made up from genuine Lola Mk 1 bodyshell from the late 50's or early 60's.
I raced it in a grass event with the South Hams Motor Club in Devon when we lived there and sold it via Piston Heads 4 years ago and I hope its made it to the road.
I am now building an turbo charged MX5 Lotus sevenesque car that also has no known kit car parts in it. This one will get finished though.

Another area worth looking at for custom build inspiration is the “formula” Society of Automotive Engineers competitions. Often called Formula SAE or Formula Student depending on which country you are in. I think its “FSAE” or “Formula SAE” in Australia, USA and most of Asia whilst Europe goes under the formula student banner.

Have a read of this if you are interested…..

Not in the league of Graber Cars or the Countach in the basement but here is a link to my personal sctach built job.

Its missing a wheel but thats what makes it far more viable in the country of rules, otherwise known as Australia.

This is my baby.

Also involved in the build was the making of an e wheel,
and learning how to use it.

Cheers,
