I'm not trolling here, but the Golf thread has prompted me to ask a long standing question I've had. They've got stacks of grip yes, but aren't very inspiring from a chassis balance point of view, and it's not like they're even cheap anymore! They've always looked pretty aweful and the build quality has gone from shocking to about bearable.

There's so much else you could get that's better, and I just can't understand how people put up with such terrible ride quality and such compromises in a car that starts out life as a practical saloon. Why not just buy a small fun hot hatch or sports car and something else cheap practical if you want fun and practicality!

So if someone cares to try and explain!

Because they are ridiculously quick point-to-point. Speed is better than driving feel.

...whilst carrying a couple of kids and the shopping.

It's as simple as that, really.

Thing is....they're not even cheap any more. They sort of made sense when they were the same price as a hot Ford or Honda, but now the cheapest fast Impreza is 32,000 and 'only' has 300bhp.

Really?

Poor build quality is not something I have ever associated with Japanese cars. Bland/plasticy interiors perhaps.

I can only imagine you have never been in or driven one.

Which are you saying had poor ride quality? even an evo9 fq360 is well damped.

And actually the chassis setup is amazing so not sure where you get that from.

Why buy a hot hatch over one for any reason bar economy?

I'm pretty sure this is just a trolling thread, because you didnt like your golf getting abused.

So on that front, a Bentley Continental Super Sport is a better driver's car than a Noble?

done the evo and sti thing, 1 evo 6 and 2 sti ppp's

supreme point to point pace, especially in the wet, immensely practical

downside, low rent interior and you look like a total plonker in them, and i got a lot of police attention in my last scooby

i think the VAG offerings have had an impact on them thou, slightly slower, nearly as quick point to point, much better interiors and you dont stand out like a barry

Yes I've driven both. It's just that they're 4wd. Whatever you do, I just don't find it entertaining. I drive both 4WD and RWD all the time and 4WD just really isn't a great deal of fun. On the road it's just grip, grip, understeer, then if you're far too committed for the road, overteer. At least in a RWD car you can have fun at vaguely sensible speeds!

I've spent quite a lot of time drifting both 4wd and rwd cars round on ice. 4wd really isn't fun in comparison. You can get them sideways, but holding them there is either a) very boring or depending on their drive distribution b) almost impossible. RWD on the other hand is fantasticly fun. Fast no, but fun yes.
